An exhibit label may summarize a finding while a photo documents a different phase of a site. NPS publishes heritage documentation and copyright guidance. A historic site can build a synthetic exercise about attributing statements to verified source versions. NPS heritage documentation guidelines · NPS copyright guidance

Invent a site alias, two practice views and a dated interpretation. Revise one claim and leave a similar photo tied to the earlier version. Ask which source supports a statement and whether the photo can be attributed. Use an original sketch if visual material helps.

Exclude actual restricted locations, culturally sensitive information, donor records, licensed images and visitor details. Review community, site and rights-holder permissions before any real transfer.

Describe a site interpretation sample

Original Fiund exercise

A revised interpretation and an older image have different provenance

An invented heritage-site alias has two original sketches and fictional interpretive text. The exercise attributes statements without using a real site, culturally sensitive information or licensed documentation.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
HS1Interpretation version AFeature F described as round; original sketch IMG-A explicitly linked to this version.
HS2Reviewed interpretation version BCorrects F description to oval after a fictional record review. No new photograph is supplied.
HS3Unlinked sketchLooks oval but lacks site alias, feature ID and permission entry. IMG-A remains labeled version A.

Question for the model

Which source supports the current written interpretation, and does it establish that IMG-A or the unlinked sketch documents the revised finding?

Show the reference answer and checks

HS2 supports the current written oval interpretation for feature F. HS1's IMG-A remains evidence associated with version A; the text correction does not create a new image or change its provenance. HS3's visual similarity lacks an identity and permission link. Report the revised statement and the unresolved visual support separately rather than treating a corrected label as proof that every nearby image depicts it.

  • Relabeling an older image's provenance solely because the interpretation text changed.
  • Assigning a visually plausible sketch to the site without an identity or rights source.

Fields to preserve

Feature and interpretation version
Identifies the statement being revised.
Image-to-version link
Preserves the documented source association.
Review basis and image permission
Separates interpretive authority from asset reuse.

Test another case

Add an authorized IMG-B link to version B but retain a restricted-use condition. Require the model to resolve attribution without assuming unrestricted reuse.

Use original invented sketches and records. Exclude restricted locations, culturally sensitive material, donor data, visitors and licensed images; real transfers need site and community authority.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
