Make a segment-level rights inventory for media and publishing
A station can own its spoken links and still carry music, syndicated inserts or advertisements it cannot offer for training.
A station can own its spoken links and still carry music, syndicated inserts or advertisements it cannot offer for training. A film producer may have a usable shot after excluding a restricted prop or performance. A publisher may control an article and have narrower rights to a supplied photograph. Record authority for each part of the asset before counting usable hours or pages.
Know what each public example establishes
Troveo presents a route for media licensing. The publicly announced Axel Springer partnership describes both a reader-facing use of publisher content and a role for that content in advancing AI training. These examples establish that distinct uses can be agreed. They do not establish which rights or prices would apply to another library. Troveo · OpenAI and Axel Springer partnership
For a recording with music, account for the composition and recording as separate works. For a published or archival asset, distinguish public access from documented reuse authority. Build an inventory without moving originals
| Practice item | Evidence to log | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Original audio or video excerpt | Source file and version, range and timebase, creator and participant authority, permitted use | Include only the range and use supported by the recorded scope |
| Embedded material | Source and owner of each recording, composition, picture, clip, typeface or other element that needs review | Hold the affected range or prepare a separately reviewed export |
| Edited or captioned derivative | Original asset, edit or track version, transformation, permission for derivative material | Match to the correct source and review whether the grant extends to the derivative |
| Public or archived material | Access status, rights statement, rights holder and unresolved claims | Review before offering a training or evaluation use |
- Give the excerpt its own ID. Record start and end in a known timebase, or edition and section for text. Link it to the exact source version.
- Keep permissions specific. Record which party can authorize the use, any exclusions, and whether the evidence is reviewed or still pending. Separate training, evaluation, publication and redistribution when the scope differs.
- Keep the first conversation light. Share the inventory structure, formats and approximate authorized volume. Use an original practice excerpt or dummy records until scope and transfer are agreed.
A media system can support an asset and related media resources, but the labels alone do not prove permission. Keep the approved authority and the reviewer’s notes with the scope. EBU media resource metadata
Explore film shot provenance, postproduction caption alignment and radio archive segments. For a podcast, start with the existing podcast assessment. Other archive owners can describe an existing dataset.
An original ten-minute inventory
Imagine a ten-minute original practice program. The producer’s spoken material runs from 0:00 to 4:00 and 5:00 to 10:00. A third-party insert occupies 4:00 to 5:00. Record the insert as a separate segment with its source and unresolved grant. The remaining nine minutes are a candidate subset for further review, rather than an automatically cleared duration.
The source master, edited mix, transcript and segment boundaries should refer to the same version. Check participant and embedded-work permissions across the remaining material. An accurate time calculation cannot establish those rights. Create a second case where an edit shifts the insert boundary and test whether the inventory follows the new version instead of reusing the old time ranges.
