Created by Humans review for authors licensing AI rights
Created by Humans offers an AI rights licensing platform for creators.
Created by Humans offers an AI rights licensing platform for creators. Its launch materials focus on books and authors, a useful distinction for rights holders whose publishers control some formats, languages or territories. Review the rights you retained before listing a title. Created by Humans · Platform launch
Audit a title one use at a time
List the author, publisher, edition, translation, illustrations and any excerpts by other authors. For each proposed use, check who can grant it. A grant to train a model, a grant to index passages for retrieval and permission to show those passages to a reader can carry different limits. A licensed text file also does not convey the rights to an audiobook performance.
Ask how a listing turns into payment
Check the current offer, the grant duration, who is eligible to license the title and how proceeds are reported. Ask when any restrictions on withdrawing a work begin and what happens to existing agreements. The public platform explains the pathway. The actual transaction terms determine compensation and permitted uses.
An original edition-level rights example
Imagine an author who controls a novel’s English text, while a translator controls a separately commissioned translation and an illustrator supplied the cover under a limited grant. Build one row for the English text, one for the translation and one for the artwork. Attach the relevant agreement reference and identify which party can answer the proposed AI-use question.
A title-level label such as ‘my book’ hides those differences. A further audiobook row would need to account for the performance and its production rights. The exercise does not decide ownership for a real work. It shows why a platform intake should identify the edition and included components rather than relying on a title and author name alone.
Questions about the transaction and its life cycle
Ask which uses the offered grant covers: training, retrieval, generated excerpts or another defined activity. Identify duration, territories, permitted recipients and the records available to the creator after a licence. Ask which event creates a payment obligation, how deductions are reported and which continuing obligations remain if a listing is withdrawn.
For an author, a useful first package is a rights inventory and a limited permitted sample. For a buyer, it is an identified edition, a specimen grant and a description of exclusions. An available platform listing supports further diligence; it does not establish that every component of the work can be used for every AI purpose.
