A book can have the correct outer cover and still contain a repeated or missing section. GPO's printing and binding standards provide public procurement context. An original exercise can test whether an assistant follows a defined gathering sequence and its execution evidence. GPO printing and binding standards

Write a short original booklet with numbered sections and build paper signatures with visible identifiers. Supply a fictional gathering order and inspection images. Duplicate one middle signature while preserving the final page count in the example. Ask the model which sequence is documented and which internal views are needed. Include an updated title page that belongs to a later edition.

Annotate signature identity, order, edition and evidence view. Reserve a different section count for evaluation. Score duplicate sections, omitted sections and edition mixing independently. A correct-looking spine or cover cannot establish the interior sequence, so the reference key should identify the exact page or record supporting each conclusion.

Use contributor-written text and original cover art. Author manuscripts, publisher files, licensed type treatments and customer orders need authority for the proposed AI use. Describe the collation-review task and verified examples in the licensing brief. The buyer's accepted specification should determine the document and image coverage needed for further collection.

A missing gathering signature behind a correct count

An owned eight-page sample booklet uses four fictional paper gathering signatures. The packet is reviewed before binding.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
G1Gathering planOrdered signatures A, B, C, D.
G2Staging photoVisible identifiers from bottom to top: D, C, C, A.
G3Photo legendGathering order is read from top to bottom.
G4CounterFour items recorded.

Question for the model

Which correction should the reviewer flag?

Show the reference answer and checks

Read G2 using G3: A, C, C, D. Compared with G1, B is absent and C appears twice; slot two needs B. G4's item count is correct even with a missing distinct signature, so count and identity need separate checks.

  • Counting repeated signatures as complete coverage
  • Reading the stack opposite to the supplied convention

Fields to preserve

signature_id
Detects missing and repeated units
gathering_index
Records position in binding order
reading_convention
Controls how photo order maps to assembly order

Test another case

Provide all expected signatures but rotate one 180 degrees; score orientation independently of correct identity and order.

Only original text and paper diagrams; exclude publisher manuscripts and actual binding tolerances.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
