PRACTICAL RESOURCE
Can wood, paper, glass and metal manufacturers sell data for AI?
A material manufacturer can propose data that shows how a product was identified, transformed, inspected and resolved.
A material manufacturer can propose data that shows how a product was identified, transformed, inspected and resolved. The useful unit might be a linked record set, a group of inspection images or a newly captured task. Its value depends on the buyer's specific model problem, the evidence available and the authority to license it.
An archive becomes more informative when a reviewer can follow the relationship between an input, its child pieces and the result actually measured. A grade name, part photograph or certificate alone can leave those relationships unresolved. Fiund's proposed industry guides illustrate tasks that a contributor could describe before sharing production files.
What the current market evidence establishes
Scale names manufacturing and robotics in its data-partnership program. Its stated preference is for established operators with real workflow history and connected systems. That gives a concrete route to investigate for an authorized operating archive. Acceptance of a particular factory's material still requires a scoped discussion. Scale data partnerships
Troveo describes licensing company exports and linked business records. A manufacturer should explain which systems connect production, inspection, changes and outcomes, then establish the current brief, preparation work and written terms. Published provider examples do not establish an offer for an individual contributor. Troveo business data
Research also shows why ordinary appearance variation matters. MVTec AD 2 includes reflective and transparent objects and evaluates changes in illumination. Its authors separate training, validation and test material and retain private test labels for benchmark evaluation. This supports a design lesson for original capture, while the benchmark serves a research role. The paper states a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 dataset license, so public availability does not grant unrestricted commercial redistribution. MVTec AD 2 research paper
Start with a decision and its evidence
| Proposed task | Evidence needed | Error worth measuring |
|---|---|---|
| Trace a cut panel or slit coil | Executed cut plan, parent identifier and transferred child identifiers | Matching a piece by dimensions alone or using a canceled plan |
| Choose a test report | Sample identity, material stage, location, units and effective version | Attaching a valid result to the wrong lot or specimen |
| Compare an assembly with an instruction | Issued drawing, component identity and views before hidden work is covered | Accepting the correct outer shape with the wrong internal component |
| Review a surface image | Article identity, scale, camera view, illumination context and independent labels | Treating a reflection as a permanent defect or missing an occluded region |
Each task has a different review key. A visible scratch can be localized in an image. The cause of that scratch may remain unknown. A source certificate can establish a recorded result while leaving its association with an unmarked remnant unresolved. Preserve those distinctions in the annotation.
A worked example of parent material and sample evidence
Every record in this example is original and fictional. It can be demonstrated with paper props.
| Record | Evidence supplied |
|---|---|
| SOURCE-A names parent sheet S1 and declared material G. | S1 has a documented source reference and declaration. |
| CUT-1 records an executed split of S1 into pieces A1 and A2. | Both child pieces have a recorded relationship to S1. |
| TEST-1 identifies sample Q1 taken from A1 and records an exercise measurement. | The measurement is directly associated with Q1 and A1. |
| PLAN-2 proposes cutting A2 into P1 and P2. No execution record is supplied. | P1 and P2 are planned outputs with execution unresolved. |
| PHOTO-R shows a remnant of similar appearance with no transferred identifier. | Appearance is visible, while the remnant's source identity remains unresolved. |
The review key accepts the S1-to-A1 and S1-to-A2 relationships because CUT-1 records execution. It associates TEST-1 with A1 and preserves the test's stated scope. It does not extend that measurement to A2 through a shared parent alone. It identifies P1 and P2 as proposed outputs and asks for evidence linking PHOTO-R to a source.
These distinctions matter across the industries in this batch. Sawmill piece continuity, paper reel measurements, glass fabrication records and steel heat reports each require their own source relationships and expert checks. The example is a proposed evaluation design, with commercial acceptance assessed against a buyer's requirements.
Preserve identity through transformations
Give each parent, child piece, sample and operation a stable identifier. Keep the executed operation separate from an estimate, proposed plan or canceled instruction. Record which revision was effective and retain the correction history.
An identity claim also needs a stated level of support. AISC discusses identification and several forms of traceability. Its guidance should be read in its own scope, and an individual buyer or project may require different relationships. The contributor brief should state exactly what its archive preserves. AISC material identification and traceability
A useful contributor-tool concept would prompt a worker to transfer the parent identifier when a piece is cut, connect a photograph to its ticket and preserve a corrected record alongside the original. It could expose a missing sample link before export. These are proposed workflow functions in this editorial package.
Capture the variation the model must handle
For an image task, record the view and the evidence a human can observe. Include a second view when it resolves a hidden identifier or ambiguous reflection. Label the change in available evidence. A model should receive credit for a justified request when the first view is insufficient.
For document tasks, include an unfamiliar layout, naming convention or unit arrangement in evaluation. Split related records by whole source history when a shared parent or near-duplicate page could reveal the answer. Test complete cases as well as unresolved ones, so the task rewards supported decisions rather than a habit of flagging every record.
Report association errors, omitted branches, wrong-version choices and unsupported approvals separately. A clean transcription can still attach the wrong result to a piece. A single aggregate score can hide that failure.
Confirm permissions at the source
List who controls each source and the intended permitted use. Customer drawings, licensed patterns, supplier certificates, inspection-agency material and outside laboratory reports may have different terms. An authorization to manufacture a product does not itself settle permission to distribute the associated records for AI use.
Keep certification artwork and product declarations accurately represented. An original demonstration should use neutral mock references and clearly invented values. Commercial examples need their actual provenance and source scope. Check whether removing restricted material breaks the relationships required for the buyer's task before preparing an export.
Make a proposal that a buyer can evaluate
Describe the exact decision, available source relationships, quantity of independently reviewable examples and review method. State whether the material is an operating archive, authorized new capture or an original demonstration used to explain the proposed task. Identify missing fields and the work needed to resolve them.
Acceptance, preparation cost and commercial terms should follow a specific brief. A small exercise can expose whether the record structure is usable before a contributor commits to a larger collection. Where expertise is required to judge the result, include the qualified review process in the proposal.
