USGS publishes bauxite and alumina information, and the Aluminum Association maintains alloy standards. A contributor can propose a task that preserves material stage and measurement basis across source records. USGS bauxite and alumina context Aluminum Association standards

Draw an original simplified flow with input material, an intermediate and an output lot. Create fictional inventory and laboratory records that explicitly name their material basis. Ask the assistant which figures can be compared under the exercise's supplied rules. Leave one record without a basis and include a product certificate for a different output lot. The key should identify both gaps instead of summing every mass field.

Annotate material stage, lot, measurement basis, reporting period and source document. Evaluation can change the table layout and include an opening inventory quantity. Score unlike-basis arithmetic, wrong-lot certificates and double counting independently. The exercise should supply any intended conversion rather than reward an assumed process yield.

Use invented values and self-authored diagrams. Real plant chemistry, operating parameters and customer certificates need disclosure authority. A licensing brief should define the evidence-and-calculation task and independent review. Confirm buyer requirements before preparing historical process records or planning additional production capture.

Do not add input and output masses together

An original cartoon material flow uses fictional accounting values and a separate intermediate stage.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1ReceiptInput card R4 logs 100 toy mass units as received.
2Flow mapIntermediate I4 logs 60 units on a stated dry basis.
3Output ledgerFinal lot O4 logs 20 units on final-product basis; no balance boundary documented.

Question for the model

Can the three rows be used to calculate a process loss?

Show the reference answer and checks

No. Records 1–3 cover different stages and bases and do not give a complete mass-balance boundary. Preserve 100 as received, 60 on dry basis and 20 final-product units. A subtraction across those unlike fields would not identify a documented process loss.

  • Subtracting wet-basis and dry-basis figures directly
  • Adding intermediate and final quantities as independent output

Fields to preserve

material_stage
Identifies input, intermediate and final
mass_basis

balance_boundary
States which flows a calculation would need

Test another case

Supply a complete toy boundary with a recycle stream; require counting the recycle only at its defined crossing.

Use fictional accounting only; exclude plant flow sheets, recovery claims and process parameters.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
