Miscellaneous wood product data for AI part orientation
The miscellaneous wood-product category needs a specific operation to make a useful data proposal.

The miscellaneous wood-product category needs a specific operation to make a useful data proposal. The USDA Wood Handbook provides material context. An original wooden-handle exercise can focus on part identity and drawing orientation, with all acceptance rules defined for the pilot. USDA Wood Handbook
Draw a simple fictional handle with two offset holes and a marked reference face. Use paper or cleared wooden props to photograph correct and reversed orientations. Supply a work order and component ticket. Ask the assistant to identify the visible mismatch and whether the component ticket belongs to the pictured part. Include a symmetric-looking view that hides the offset, requiring a second angle.
Annotate part identity, reference face, hole position, view and supporting instruction. Hold out a different handle outline for evaluation. Score orientation errors separately from unsupported material claims. A model should not infer species, strength or suitability from a similar grain pattern when the records provide no such evidence.
Use original designs and permissioned materials. Customer tooling drawings, licensed product shapes and outside inspection documents require separate sharing authority. Describe this precise task and the independent key to prospective buyers. Their accepted specification should determine whether the next collection needs additional views, records or a documented assembly sequence.

A mirrored handle cannot pass by grain alone
An original handle stencil uses two offset dots and a marked face. Photos depict paper mockups.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| G1 | Stencil | With face mark up and tip pointing away, dot A lies left of center; dot B lies right. |
| G2 | Photo | Face mark up, tip away, A right and B left. |
| G3 | Grain arrows | Both stencil and mockup show grain along the length. |
| G4 | Fixture check | Image has a legible asymmetric ruler and was not mirrored. |
Question for the model
What aspect matches, and what does not?
Show the reference answer and checks
The lengthwise grain orientation agrees under G3. The dot geometry does not: G1 and G2 show opposite offsets under the same face and tip reference, and G4 rules out image mirroring in this exercise. The model should store both observations independently.
- Accepting matched grain as proof of correct handedness
- Using screen-left without a face and tip reference
Fields to preserve
- face_and_tip
- Fixes object orientation
- dot_lateral_offset
- Records handed geometry independently of grain
- image_mirror_status
- Distinguishes camera effects from part orientation
Test another case
Supply a mirrored copy with the ruler reversed and require the reviewer to correct the view before comparing dots.
The mockup contains no commercial drawings, jigs or claims about strength.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
