Reforestation planting and survival records for AI review
A record showing seedlings were planted cannot answer how many were later found alive.
NAICS 115310 · Support Activities for Forestry
A record showing seedlings were planted cannot answer how many were later found alive. The Forest Service publishes resources on nursery stock for forest regeneration and field inventory. A forestry contractor could provide a small exercise that asks a model to distinguish work completed from a later observed outcome. Forest Service regeneration stock research · Forest Service forest inventory field guide
Write a fictional planting record with a planned density and a completion count. Add a later sample-plot visit with an observed count and a clear description of coverage. One plot should contain a missing follow-up rather than a zero. Ask what the model can report for the sampled area and what would require more observations. Use a qualified reviewer to verify the distinction between planned, installed, and observed.
Remove project locations, actual contract prices, protected species information, and landowner access details. Use a fictional plot map and avoid representing the exercise as certification of a site.

Completed planting counts and later sample observations answer different questions
An imaginary planting project has abstract plots and original visit cards. No sensitive species, project coordinates, actual contract or site certification is represented.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| RP1 | Plan and completion | Plot A planned 100 seedlings, documented planted 90. Plot B planned 100, documented planted 100. |
| RP2 | Later sample visit | A's defined ten-position sample: 8 observed alive, 1 observed not alive, 1 position not assessed because view inaccessible. No extrapolation method supplied. |
| RP3 | Plot B follow-up | Scheduled visit only, no completed observation record. Dashboard draft writes B survival=0. |
Question for the model
What planting and sampled follow-up facts are supported, and what cannot be concluded about overall survival?
Show the reference answer and checks
RP1 supports 90 planted in A and 100 in B, separately from their plans. RP2 records eight alive and one not alive among nine assessed sample positions, with one unassessed; it does not establish a whole-plot survival rate without a defined sampling and estimation basis. RP3 provides no B follow-up observation, so zero is unsupported. Keep planned, installed, assessed and missing counts distinct rather than equating planting completion with later survival.
- Treating planted seedlings as confirmed surviving seedlings.
- Coding missing follow-up as zero or extrapolating a partial sample without its design.
Fields to preserve
- Plot and planting record type
- Separates planned and completed work.
- Sample coverage and assessment state
- Defines the observed denominator.
- Visit completion and estimation basis
- Limits broader outcome claims.
Test another case
Supply B's completed sample visit with an explicit coverage map. Require a sample-specific result while retaining the distinction from a whole-site certification.
Use fictional maps and records. Exclude locations, access details, contract prices and protected resources; qualified reviewers retain site judgments.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project.
