The print issue and web edition may carry different captions, sidebars and correction dates. IPTC’s news exchange guidance provides context for distinct media items and versions. A periodical publisher can demonstrate issue-to-article mapping with material written for the exercise. IPTC NewsML-G2 guidelines

Create a fictional issue with two articles and an online revision of one. Give a sidebar a separate rights status. Ask which version belongs to the requested issue, which correction is web-only, and which materials are out of scope for use. Score issue identity, article relationship, and the source of each revision independently.

Check permission for commissioned work, images, syndicated inserts and archive access before discussing actual material. Keep unpublished issues, subscriber information and advertiser records out of the practice packet.

Describe a periodical edition sample

Original Fiund exercise

A web correction does not silently rewrite the print issue

An independently authored fictional magazine issue has two articles and a separately scoped sidebar. The exercise concerns edition mapping rather than an actual publisher archive.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
PE1Print issue I7Article A caption says blue; article B caption says green. Sidebar S has practice-use status excluded.
PE2Web revision of article ACaption corrected to amber on day 8. Web record links back to I7/A but states web-only update.
PE3Index cardLists I7, A and S under one entry with generic available status. No print reissue or sidebar grant supplied.

Question for the model

Which caption belongs to the original print I7/A and which to the revised web A, and does the index clear sidebar S?

Show the reference answer and checks

PE1 supports blue as the caption in original print I7/A. PE2 supports amber for the web revision on day 8, explicitly without establishing a print reissue. Article B remains green in the supplied print issue. PE3's generic available status does not override S's separate exclusion. Preserve issue, article, medium and component-level status rather than merging all associated materials into one edition or grant.

  • Reporting the web-only caption as though it appeared in the original print issue.
  • Treating a combined index entry as permission for an excluded sidebar.

Fields to preserve

Issue, article and medium
Defines the requested publication instance.
Revision time and scope
Shows where the correction applies.
Sidebar identity and permission
Keeps component rights separate from index availability.

Test another case

Issue a corrected print reprint with a new issue-edition ID. Require separate original-print, reprint and web answers.

Use original mock articles and layouts. Exclude unpublished issues, subscribers, advertiser records and unlicensed commissioned or syndicated work.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
