Art and calendar edition records for AI

The same artwork can appear in more than one edition with a different crop or reproduction grant.

The same artwork can appear in more than one edition with a different crop or reproduction grant. Census lists art and calendar publishers in this group. Copyright Office materials give context for visual works. An original practice inventory can test the relationship among a source work, derivative, and publication. Invent two artworks and two editions. Give one an original image, a crop with its own ID and a recorded grant for a specific mock use. Leave the other grant unresolved. Ask which version appears in each issue and what use the practice record supports.

Use original graphics. Keep actual artist agreements, private prices, high-resolution copyrighted works and identifiable third-party material out of the sample.

Describe an edition provenance exercise

Original Fiund exercise

A crop and an edition need their own provenance links

Two original abstract graphics and invented publication records make a rights-and-version exercise. The example contains no third-party artwork or actual artist agreement.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
AR1Original asset registerWork W1 has full image F1 and crop C1. Work W2 has full image F2.
AR2Practice edition inventoryCalendar edition E1 uses C1; E2 uses F2. Both publication layouts are independently authored.
AR3Fictional grant recordG1 covers C1 in E1 for practice use U during days 1–30. F1 and F2 have no separate U grant in the packet.

Question for the model

Which asset-to-edition use is explicitly documented for U on day 20, and can that grant be extended to the full image or second edition?

Show the reference answer and checks

AR1–AR3 connect crop C1 from W1 to edition E1 and an explicit practice-U grant covering day 20. The grant names C1, not full image F1 or W2's F2 in E2. Those other uses remain undocumented under the supplied exercise terms. Preserve the original-work, derivative, edition and grant identities rather than treating ownership of one file or a shared publication format as a blanket permission.

  • Extending a crop-specific grant to the full image automatically.
  • Using E1's grant to clear E2 merely because both are calendars.

Fields to preserve

Source-work and derivative IDs
Shows which crop came from which original.
Edition placement
Identifies the asset actually published.
Grant use, asset and term
Makes the fictional permission scope testable.

Test another case

Add an F1 grant for E2 beginning day 40. Ask separately about day 20 and day 45, without changing the C1/E1 record.

Use original graphics and independent terms. Exclude artist contracts, private prices, high-resolution third-party works and identifiable source material.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
