A memo arrangement can track temporary custody separately from ownership and a product’s stated attributes. FTC’s Jewelry Guides provide context for product descriptions. An original ledger can test whether software attributes movement and disclosure to the right item. FTC Jewelry Guides
Create two inert sample cards with fictional stone identifiers. Give one a memo transfer and later return, then attach the second item’s description by mistake. Ask which custody state and attributes the sources support. Score item ID, event and exact disclosure separately.
Use no real stones, addresses, secure transport details, valuations or customer contracts. Clear the original paperwork and photos.
Describe a fictional wholesale jewelry memo exercise
Original Fiund exercise
A memo return changes custody without transferring a neighboring item's disclosure
Two inert original sample cards use invented stone aliases. There is no actual jewelry, secure transport, address, valuation, contract or authentication result.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| JWM1 | Memo and return | Item A transferred temporarily under memo M1 and later returned under exact matched event R1. Both records expressly concern custody only. |
| JWM2 | Original disclosure | Item B's matched card states abstract origin O2 and treatment T2. No A-specific disclosure supplied. |
| JWM3 | Loose attachment | Copy of B's card appears in A's return packet, still naming B. No equivalence or physical ownership transfer recorded. |
Question for the model
What custody state is supported for A, and can the attached B card establish A's attributes or ownership?
Show the reference answer and checks
JWM1 documents A's temporary transfer and matched return to the sender in the fixture. It does not document a sale or ownership change. JWM2 and JWM3 place O2/T2 only on B, so the copied card cannot supply A's missing disclosure. Preserve custody events and exact product statements as separate chains rather than infer physical ownership or attributes from a returned item or from paperwork in the same packet.
- Equating temporary custody or return with ownership transfer.
- Copying another item's origin or treatment statement from a misplaced attachment.
Fields to preserve
- Item and memo/return reference
- Defines custody.
- Exact disclosure and target
- Supports product statements.
- Ownership scope and missing source
- Limits downstream claims.
Test another case
Add an A-specific disclosure with a different treatment code. Require attributes to resolve without changing A's custody history.
Use inert props and original paperwork. Exclude actual stones, contracts and valuations; qualified staff retain authentication and rights decisions.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
