An instrument can ship with a calibration record that covers a stated range and version. NIST describes metrological traceability as a property of a measurement result. A distributor can build an original exercise to test linkage without claiming that a document proves all future measurements. NIST metrological traceability

Create two dummy instrument cards and one original certificate-like record. Give the record a matching ID but a narrower range than a mock purchase requirement. Ask what the supplied evidence covers and what needs a separate check. Score device, measurement basis and cited scope.

Use original dummy records. Exclude real laboratory customers, testing data, instrument serials and licensed certificates.

Describe a fictional calibration document exercise

Original Fiund exercise

A calibration document can match an instrument while covering too narrow a range

An original certificate-like exercise uses abstract instruments and practice units. It contains no real lab, serial, calibration result, customer or measurement claim.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
LIC1Mock purchase requirementInstrument DEMO-I, version V2, requires documentary coverage over 0–100 practice units U.
LIC2Matched certificate-like cardExact DEMO-I/V2, explicit covered range 0–60 U. No statement for higher values or all future measurements.
LIC3Neighbor cardDEMO-I2/V2 covers 0–100 U but has a different instrument alias. No approved cross-reference or substitute evidence.

Question for the model

Which identity and range are supported for the requested instrument, and can the neighbor card supply the uncovered range?

Show the reference answer and checks

LIC2 exactly matches DEMO-I/V2 but covers only 0–60 U, leaving the requested range above 60 through 100 undocumented. LIC3's wider coverage belongs to DEMO-I2 and cannot extend the matched card. Report identity success and range gap independently and request a verified source for the needed scope. The fixture does not establish measurement traceability for future results, certification validity or instrument fitness.

  • Accepting an exact instrument ID without checking its stated range.
  • Borrowing a wider range from a neighboring instrument with a similar identifier.

Fields to preserve

Instrument alias and version
Defines scope.
Required and covered range with unit
Supports comparison.
Exact certificate target and gap
Limits the finding.

Test another case

Add a second matching range card from 60 to 100 with different measurement method. Require method continuity to be reviewed before claiming one covered range.

Use original dummy documents. Exclude real certificates and lab records; qualified staff retain actual metrology decisions.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
