Folding carton crease data for AI visual checks

A folding-carton image can contain a crease crack, a deliberate pale line in the artwork, or a reflection.

NAICS 322212 · Folding Paperboard Box Manufacturing

A folding-carton image can contain a crease crack, a deliberate pale line in the artwork, or a reflection. Useful training images show what changed after the fold. The Paperboard Packaging Council describes paperboard packaging, and NIST has published work on locating manufacturing defects from images. Together these support a sensible inspection experiment. Confirm with a buyer that crease condition is within its task. Paperboard Packaging Council · NIST defect segmentation

Capture the change across the crease

Start with three identical generic carton designs. On each, capture the flat blank, then a standard folded view. Label the affected line and whether exposed fiber can actually be confirmed. Include a carton with a white graphic deliberately crossing the fold. Repeat the photo under a different angle for the same specimen, then hold out a different paperboard finish so the evaluation can detect overreliance on surface glare.

Use a privately commissioned or unbranded layout cleared for training. Client packaging art and unreleased product names may belong to another party. Share a sample using finished stock, away from cutting or creasing machinery.

Printed flecks and a crack at the fold

The contributor draws original dots on a paper carton. Light-angle changes make a staged surface break easier to identify.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
C1Flat proofDeliberate white flecks repeat at equal spacing on both sides of fold F1.
C2Folded view under side lightContinuous irregular white line tracks F1 across four fleck intervals.
C3Face-on frameThe repeat flecks remain visible; fold line largely disappears.
C4ScopeRecord visible features only.

Question for the model

Which marks should be labeled as artwork and which as an observed crease feature?

Show the reference answer and checks

Label the spaced flecks as artwork using C1 and C3. C2 shows an additional continuous irregular line coincident with F1 and absent from the flat proof. Record that visible crease feature along with its side-light view; do not infer a cause or grade.

  • Flagging all white ink details as damage
  • Calling a face-on frame negative evidence when the relevant feature is angle-dependent

Fields to preserve

fold_id
Locates the observed line
proof_match
Disambiguates intended artwork
view_light
Documents the conditions under which the feature is visible

Test another case

Use an intentional white rule on the fold plus a discontinuity outside it, requiring separate artwork and surface labels.

Use owned art and inert paper; exclude customer dielines, artwork and actual rejection rules.
