Bare printed circuit board inspection data for AI

A bare board inspection model needs to tell a real indication from an alignment error.

NAICS 334412 · Bare Printed Circuit Board Manufacturing

A bare board inspection model needs to tell a real indication from an alignment error. IPC’s printed-board acceptability reference and NIST’s manufacturing defect research establish context for reviewing board features and localizing defects. An independently designed test coupon gives a shop a way to demonstrate data quality without revealing a circuit design. IPC-A-600 document contents · NIST manufacturing defect research

Give the model a simple coupon diagram with two fiducials, an inspection image, and the expected feature boundaries. Label a known conductor interruption and a second view with an apparent mismatch caused by misregistration. Provide the reviewed coordinates and whether the image had sufficient resolution. A split by coupon design can reveal whether an apparent improvement comes from memorizing the layout.

Clear the coupon design and manufacturing images before release. Exclude customer Gerber files, layer stacks, protected board layouts, proprietary recipes, and automated inspection configuration exports.

Describe a bare-board test coupon

Original Fiund exercise

A board indication survives image rotation

Original paper board geometry has a square corner and labeled test cells; no circuit design is present.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1Board mapReference square fixes the top-left in board coordinates; feature P4 at row 2, column 3.
2AOI recordImage rotated; candidate tied to board row 2, column 3.
3Reviewer noteVisible feature at P4 classified as intended printed dot.

Question for the model

How should the candidate and reviewer label be stored?

Show the reference answer and checks

Keep the candidate at board cell 2/3 and link the P4 reviewer decision using records 1–3. The rotation changes image pixels but not the board key. Preserve the automated indication and the reviewed intended-dot label rather than counting a confirmed defect.

  • Using pixel row and column as stable board coordinates
  • Treating every automated candidate as verified

Fields to preserve

board_cell
Anchors indications to the fixture
image_transform
Maps each frame to the board
review_decision
Separates detection from confirmed label

Test another case

Give the same coordinate on a revised board where P4 is removed; require matching layout revision first.

Original paper geometry only; no board design, vendor defects, test thresholds or real production images.
