Connector mating data for training and evaluating AI

A connector that looks seated can still have a partly engaged latch.

NAICS 334417 · Electronic Connector Manufacturing

A connector that looks seated can still have a partly engaged latch. NIST’s robotic assembly test methods include connector insertions. A connector manufacturer can build an evaluation around the last visible clue before a confirmed seat, then test how well that clue transfers to a different housing. NIST assembly performance metrics

Use a de-energized practice pair. Record the keyed approach, an approved incomplete-seat demonstration, and the verified seated state. Add a macro view or authorized measurement from the same attempt. The labels can identify compatible part pair, orientation, apparent versus measured seat, and whether the latch was observable. Put a different housing family in a holdout set so the test does not reward recognition of one connector shape.

Use an owned demo, anonymous dimensions where acceptable, and consented hands-only recording. Avoid sharing customer pinouts, unreleased housing drawings, and test results tied to a restricted assembly.

Original Fiund exercise

Orientation can be correct while seating remains incomplete

Two paper housings have identical profiles and a visible reference notch. Mock gap readings are provided.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1DrawingExpected notch alignment; seated toy gap at most 1 mm.
2PhotoNotches line up in sample C4.
3Gap tableC4 gap measured 3 mm from the stated reference plane.

Question for the model

How should C4 be scored on the two checks?

Show the reference answer and checks

C4 matches the orientation criterion in records 1 and 2, but its 3 mm reading exceeds the toy seating limit by 2 mm under records 1 and 3. Store separate orientation and gap results rather than using notch alignment as proof of seating.

  • Treating alignment as completion
  • Comparing a gap without its reference plane

Fields to preserve

notch_alignment
Checks orientation independently
seating_gap_mm
Quantifies the observed fit dimension
reference_plane
Makes measurements comparable

Test another case

Use a photo that conceals the mating plane while notches remain visible; retain alignment and abstain on seating.

No actual connectors, pinouts, installation, electrical compatibility or genuine tolerances.
