Voiceprint (biometric identifier)
The distinctive, measurable characteristics of a person’s voice, treated as a biometric identifier under several privacy laws. Collecting or analyzing voiceprints typically requires specific consent beyond a content licence.
Speaker-recognition systems compute voice embeddings that can identify a person across recordings — the capability biometric laws regulate. Illinois’ BIPA requires informed written consent before collecting biometric identifiers and has produced major class actions; other states have parallel statutes. Consent for content use does not automatically cover biometric analysis.
Why it matters
If a use case involves recognizing or verifying speakers, biometric consent language must be in the release.
