PII (personally identifiable information)
Information that can identify a specific person — names, contact details, and under many privacy laws voice recordings themselves. Datasets containing PII carry privacy obligations on top of copyright ones.
Privacy laws define it broadly: the GDPR’s personal data covers anything relating to an identifiable person, and voice recordings routinely qualify. Obligations include a lawful basis for processing, purpose limitation, deletion rights, and security. Datasets are screened for incidental PII — names, numbers, addresses spoken aloud — before delivery.
Why it matters
PII turns a copyright transaction into a copyright-plus-privacy transaction, with obligations that follow the data to the buyer.
