AISC explains material identification and traceability in its fabrication FAQ. A steel mill can propose a dataset that follows a recorded heat through cast products and the test evidence attached to them. AISC material identification and traceability

Create fictional heat records, a casting ledger and two mill reports. Give adjacent heats the same declared grade but different identifiers. Ask the assistant which report supports each cast product. Include a corrected test report and a dispatch list that contains only the grade. The key should preserve the correction history and identify the dispatch whose heat association lacks evidence.

Annotate heat, cast product, sample reference, grade and document version separately. Hold out a new identifier format for evaluation. Score matching by grade alone, use of a superseded report and invented heat continuity independently. A response should cite the source of each accepted relationship and recognize a complete match when the required identifiers are present.

Use self-authored reports and invented values. Actual customer specifications, mill chemistry, inspection information and licensed documents need disclosure authority. A licensing brief should state the identity-and-evidence task and independent review. Confirm the buyer's required material history before preparing a larger archive or planning capture on an operating line.

Original Fiund exercise

Follow the specimen through heat and cast identifiers

Invented steel records contain identity fields only. The exercise does not certify material.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1Cast ledgerHeat H4 produced casts C11 and C12.
2Specimen mapCoupon S11 from C11 and S12 from C12.
3Report indexR9 names S12 and H4; no entry for S11.

Question for the model

Which cast has a linked coupon report?

Show the reference answer and checks

C12 links to R9 through S12 in records 2 and 3. H4 in record 1 links both casts to the same heat but does not extend the specimen report to C11. C11's separate coupon has no linked report in this packet.

  • Using heat identity as specimen identity
  • Assigning one coupon report to sibling casts without a declared scope

Fields to preserve

heat_id
Preserves the upstream production grouping
cast_id
Separates intermediate child lots
coupon_id
Determines report linkage at specimen level

Test another case

Give a report expressly scoped to the whole heat and separately tag its sampled coupon; keep measured object and declared coverage distinct.

No authentic mill reports, metallurgy settings, structural properties or conformance claims.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
