Potato bruise and cut-sample images for AI

The outside of a tuber gives limited evidence about a mark found inside.

The outside of a tuber gives limited evidence about a mark found inside. USDA potato inspection material gives context for checking sample defects. A farm can make a narrow computer-vision evaluation that tests when a reviewer needs an authorized interior view. USDA potato grades and standards · USDA processing potato inspection instructions

Select approved training tubers and assign IDs before they are photographed. Pair the exterior with an existing authorized cut-surface photo from the same tuber. Give the model a known interior mark, a superficial soil streak, and a case with an exterior view only. Have a reviewer label visible location and how the finding was confirmed. Hold out a different variety or lighting setup so a model cannot solve the task by skin color.

Ask the farm and packing partner who owns samples and imagery from the grading station. Remove reject rates, field IDs, brand markings, and buyer terms. An owned sample shot on a plain bench avoids collecting on a production line.

Original Fiund exercise

A surface streak and an interior mark require specimen-matched views

Original textual annotations describe fictitious training tubers and already authorized view types. No cutting, product damage, actual images or official grade decision is performed.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
PT1Tuber A paired viewsExterior has a dark streak. Reviewer labels it superficial soil; matching authorized interior-view annotation shows no mark in its reviewed region.
PT2Tuber B paired viewsExterior reviewed as visually clear in the supplied face. Matching interior-view annotation records an internal mark at region R.
PT3Tuber CExterior-only view with a dark region. No interior view or reviewed explanation supplied.

Question for the model

Which tuber has a documented interior mark, and can C's exterior appearance resolve its interior condition?

Show the reference answer and checks

PT2 supplies the interior mark for B despite its clear-looking exterior face. PT1 separately documents A's superficial soil label and the limited interior region reviewed. PT3 lacks an interior view and an explanation for its dark region, so C's interior condition remains unresolved. Preserve specimen-matched view and reviewer scope instead of using skin appearance as proof of internal condition or borrowing another tuber's annotation.

  • Predicting an interior finding from an exterior mark alone.
  • Pairing a cut-surface view with the wrong specimen or generalizing beyond its reviewed region.

Fields to preserve

Tuber identity and paired-view link
Preserves specimen continuity.
Exterior versus interior region
Separates observation types.
Reviewer explanation and missing view
Makes uncertainty explicit.

Test another case

Use a different authorized skin variety with a naturally darker exterior. Require direct reviewed evidence rather than a learned color shortcut.

Use owned approved samples and original annotations. Clear grading-station imagery separately; exclude rejects, field IDs, brands and buyer terms.
