Machine shop inspection data for visual quality control
A visual inspection model learns more from confirmed examples than from a large folder of similar part photos.

A visual inspection model learns more from confirmed examples than from a large folder of similar part photos. MVTec’s published anomaly detection benchmark illustrates a research setup with normal images, anomalous images and localized defect labels. A machine shop’s original sample can complement a public benchmark by showing the visual variation on its own approved test pieces. A research benchmark establishes the task, while a buyer brief establishes a purchase opportunity. MVTec Anomaly Detection Dataset
Connect every image to a verified result
Use internally owned test coupons or other approved parts. Photograph a known-good item and controlled variants with burrs, scratches or finish differences that a reviewer can identify. Record the part family, material, imaging setup, inspection result and measurement reference. Keep a region label if a buyer needs the defect location. Include examples where harmless variation looks like a defect, such as a reflection from a change in lighting.
Split by physical item and production lot before evaluation. A burst of angles from the same part can make the test look accurate even when the model fails on a different part. A separate held-out lot also shows whether a camera, lighting or finish change alters performance.
Keep proprietary production work separate
Use parts the company is authorized to share. Review customer drawings, dimensions, process parameters, serials and supplier restrictions separately. Start with approved post-process images, outside an active machine cycle. If the buyer needs measurements or CAD files, scope those rights explicitly.
Describe the defect taxonomy and measurement method. Include which parts can appear in a limited sample and who can approve the files. Describe your dataset
Original Fiund exercise
Keep a reflection and a reviewed surface mark distinct
Invented coupon images and reviewer records illustrate visual inspection evidence. They contain no customer designs, dimensions, process parameters or machine instructions.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| COUPON-A | Original image pair | Two views show the same owned practice coupon. A bright streak changes position with the light. |
| REVIEW-A | Independent practice key | The reviewer marks the changing streak as a reflection in the supplied exercise. |
| COUPON-B | Separate image pair | A marked region remains at the same specimen location under both views. |
| REVIEW-B | Independent practice key | The reviewer identifies the specified persistent surface mark on B, with its region reference. |
Question for the model
What reference distinction is supported, and how should image views be grouped for evaluation?
Show the reference answer and checks
The supplied reviewer keys distinguish A's changing reflection from B's persistent marked region. Both views of a coupon remain related observations of the same physical item. Keep them grouped before splitting the data, rather than use one angle for training and the other as an independent specimen test. These references classify the authored exercise; they do not certify an actual manufactured part.
- Calling every bright streak a defect without its supporting review.
- Treating multiple angles of one coupon as independent held-out specimens.
Fields to preserve
- Physical specimen
- Group views of the same coupon.
- Imaging condition
- Preserve the light and view change relevant to appearance.
- Region and reference label
- Connect a mark to the reviewed location and definition.
- Source authority
- Identify which test parts and images can be shared.
Test another case
Introduce a newly authored coupon and different lighting, with an independently checked key. Hold out the entire item rather than one familiar angle.
Use owned or approved post-process examples outside active machinery. Public benchmark references provide context and do not grant rights to include their assets in a commercial package.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
