An amended filing may change one section while leaving the rest of an earlier filing relevant.

An amended filing may change one section while leaving the rest of an earlier filing relevant. SEC’s EDGAR documentation describes how filings and structured facts can be retrieved. An investment banking team can test whether a model cites the right source and understands which document supersedes a statement. SEC EDGAR API documentation

Create a practice offering packet with an original filing, one amendment, and a memo dated before the amendment. Give the amendment an explicit scope and a date. Ask which description was available for the earlier memo and which statement changes afterward. Grade issuer and document identity, version, cited text, and treatment of an unaffected section separately.

Keep confidential client documents, nonpublic transaction data, insider information, third-party research, and identifiers outside the sample. Use independently written materials or public filings with terms and embedded rights checked. The benchmark does not offer investment advice.

Describe a filing version test

Original Fiund exercise

A scoped amendment changes one section while preserving the earlier memo's information set

An imaginary issuer has an original offering-description fixture. None of the text comes from a real filing, transaction or confidential research document.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
FA1Original packet F1Issuer I-A, published day 2. Section USE says purpose X; section CONTACT names desk D.
FA2Amendment F1APublished day 8 for I-A. Explicitly replaces section USE with purpose Y; states section CONTACT unchanged.
FA3Memo and unrelated packetMemo M dated day 5 cites F1. Issuer I-B has another amendment with a similar title but no I-A link.

Question for the model

What USE description was available to M, and which sections support a day-9 summary of I-A?

Show the reference answer and checks

FA3 dates M before FA2's publication, so FA1's purpose X was the supplied description available on day 5. For day 9, FA2 replaces USE with Y while explicitly leaving CONTACT unchanged; cite the amendment for USE and F1 for desk D. The I-B amendment belongs to another issuer. Preserve both the historical information set and the amendment's limited scope rather than treating every earlier section as replaced.

  • Citing an amendment that had not been published at the memo's date.
  • Discarding unaffected sections or mixing amendments from similarly titled issuer packets.

Fields to preserve

Issuer and document identity
Prevents cross-issuer source joins.
Publication date and as-of cutoff
Defines availability.
Amended section and preserved section
Makes supersession scope explicit.

Test another case

Add a day-10 amendment changing CONTACT only. Require USE to remain Y, with a separate source for the new contact.

Use independently written practice materials. Exclude nonpublic transactions, client work, insider information and licensed research; no investment recommendation is made.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
