Geophysical survey line and seismic trace metadata for AI

A profile image may look complete while its export leaves out traces or records them under a different timing convention.

A profile image may look complete while its export leaves out traces or records them under a different timing convention. The Society of Exploration Geophysicists publishes the SEG-Y standard and an open example. A survey firm can create a synthetic linkage exercise without revealing actual field data. SEG seismic data standards

Generate two dummy survey lines with overlapping trace numbers and different acquisition dates. Include a practice profile that covers part of one line. Ask the model to link the profile to its headers and flag the missing interval. Keep source, timing basis and units in the evaluator’s key.

Use original synthetic traces and abstract coordinates. Exclude client acreage, concession information, operational maps and confidential interpretation. Confirm source permissions before adding any real records.

Overlapping trace numbers do not identify the survey line

Synthetic trace cards and original profile diagrams use abstract coordinates and timing units. No actual seismic signal, acreage, field operation or confidential interpretation is supplied.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
GPF1Dummy line headersLine L1/day A traces 1–5, time unit U. Line L2/day B also traces 1–5, time unit V.
GPF2Profile export P1Explicitly links L1 traces 1–3 under U; traces 4–5 omitted from the exported range.
GPF3Unassigned profile P2Shows trace labels 1–3, but line, date and timing unit missing. No U-to-V equivalence supplied.

Question for the model

What source and missing interval are documented for P1, and can P2 be assigned or compared by trace numbers alone?

Show the reference answer and checks

GPF2 traces P1 to L1/day A under U and explicitly leaves L1 traces 4–5 outside its export. GPF3's 1–3 labels also occur in L2, so they do not establish its line or date. Its missing timing basis additionally prevents a supported U/V comparison. Preserve line, acquisition date, trace range and units instead of treating a visually complete profile or repeated trace numbers as full source coverage.

  • Joining profiles across lines using trace number alone.
  • Interpreting an omitted export interval as a missing physical observation or ignoring an unknown timing unit.

Fields to preserve

Line, date and trace key
Disambiguates overlapping numbering.
Export range versus source range
Shows which records were actually included.
Timing unit and convention
Limits cross-profile comparison.

Test another case

Link P2 to L2 but leave its timing unit absent. Require identity to resolve while comparison basis remains incomplete.

Use original synthetic traces and abstract geometry. Exclude acreage, concessions, operational maps and client interpretation.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
