A site history may contain property uses for several years and a gap where the available records show little. EPA’s All Appropriate Inquiries materials discuss assessment records and data gaps. A consultant can build a fictional evidence test without submitting an assessment or exposing a real property. EPA All Appropriate Inquiries

Invent an abstract parcel and three source documents covering different periods. Give one site label that looks similar but refers to another parcel. Ask the model to build the supported timeline and mark the period it cannot document. Score source dates, parcel identity and accurate uncertainty.

Use original writing and invented site details. Exclude actual owner records, sampling results, maps and client reports. Keep contamination and compliance judgments with authorized professionals.

Describe a fictional site history sample

Original Fiund exercise

An undocumented interval is a data gap, not proof of no activity

A fictional parcel history contains original records and abstract date ranges. No actual property, owner, map, sampling result or assessment conclusion is represented.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
EHX1Practice parcel A source 1Documents generic use U during years 1–3.
EHX2Practice parcel A source 2Documents generic use V during years 6–8; no coverage for years 4–5.
EHX3Lookalike sourceParcel A2 has use W during years 4–5. No alias or boundary record links A2 to A.

Question for the model

What timeline is documented for A, and does the missing interval or A2 record establish what occurred there in years 4–5?

Show the reference answer and checks

EHX1 and EHX2 support A's use U in years 1–3 and V in years 6–8. Years 4–5 remain undocumented for A. EHX3 concerns distinct parcel A2 and supplies no identity link to fill that gap. Missing records do not establish no activity, contamination or any particular use. Report the supported intervals and precise evidence gap without importing a similarly labeled property's history.

  • Treating an absent record as proof that a site had no activity.
  • Filling a parcel timeline from a near-matching identifier without a verified relationship.

Fields to preserve

Parcel and source identity
Defines the history being assembled.
Covered interval
Makes gaps and overlaps visible.
Alias evidence and uncertainty
Prevents plausible names from becoming unverified joins.

Test another case

Supply a source covering A in year 4 only. Require the model to narrow the gap to year 5 rather than claiming the entire interval resolved.

Use invented site descriptions. Exclude actual owners, samples, maps and client reports; contamination and compliance judgments stay with authorized professionals.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
