One furniture model can travel as multiple cartons, with a separate component package. GS1’s EPCIS guideline describes packaging and receiving events. CPSC publishes furniture safety resources. An original inventory exercise can distinguish a complete carton set from a received shipment. GS1 EPCIS guideline · CPSC furniture resources

Set up three empty cartons under a dummy model. Record the first and second as received and add a component bag from another version. Ask which set is supported and what is missing. A reviewer checks packaging level and model revision.

Use store-owned props and original labels. Exclude delivery addresses, supplier drawings, proprietary assembly instructions and customer records.

Describe a staged furniture carton exercise

Original Fiund exercise

A shipment receipt can leave a carton set incomplete for its exact model revision

Three original empty cartons and one inert component bag use dummy furniture IDs. There are no actual assembly instructions, addresses, customers or product-safety judgments.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
FCS1Set requirementMock model M/v2 requires numbered cartons C1, C2 and C3 plus separate component pack P2. Original set list includes all four packaging records.
FCS2Receiving scanC1 and C2 exactly match M/v2 and shipment S. No C3 scan. Generic receipt says S arrived.
FCS3Loose component bagVisible P1 marked M/v1, not the expected P2. No approved substitution or independent C3 receipt.

Question for the model

Which parts of the set were received, and why does the shipment receipt not establish a complete M/v2 set?

Show the reference answer and checks

FCS2 supports receipt of matching C1 and C2 and the broader shipment arrival. FCS1 still requires C3 and P2; FCS3 supplies a different v1 bag rather than the needed P2. Report the two matched cartons, missing C3 and mismatched component pack separately. Do not infer complete contents from a shipment-level receipt, a bag's presence or the shared model name. The fixture does not establish assembly readiness or safety.

  • Treating overall shipment arrival as confirmation of every numbered carton.
  • Accepting a component bag from a prior model revision without approved equivalence.

Fields to preserve

Model, revision and shipment
Defines the ordered set.
Carton and component-pack ID
Preserves packaging levels.
Received, missing and mismatched states
Supports line-level reconciliation.

Test another case

Add C3 with a v1 label. Require arrival to be observed while the v2 carton requirement remains unresolved.

Use original empty cartons and owned labels. Exclude supplier drawings, actual delivery files and proprietary instructions.
