Food pantry case counts and distribution inventory data for AI
A pantry inventory may count cases at receipt and individual units when supplies are packed.
NAICS 624210 · Community Food Services
A pantry inventory may count cases at receipt and individual units when supplies are packed. Federal rules for the Emergency Food Assistance Program describe a public food distribution pathway. A pantry can use a closed-room exercise to demonstrate unit conversion and inventory evidence without recording recipients. Federal Emergency Food Assistance Program rules
Make inert cases with independently authored labels. Give one a stated unit count and the other no packing basis. Document a practice transfer and ask which total can be calculated and which quantity remains uncertain. If you film the task, show hands, items and labels while keeping the inventory answer key separate.
Use original labels and consenting adult staff or volunteers. Keep recipient information, real intake, addresses and identifiable volunteer records out.

Original Fiund exercise
Cases and individual units need a stated pack size before inventory arithmetic
A closed-room exercise uses empty cartons, inert units and original labels. There are no food recipients, real intake records, distribution locations or operational inventory claims.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| FPY1 | Carton A label | Product A: 3 cases received, 8 inert units per case. Original practice label and receipt agree. |
| FPY2 | Transfer record | 5 individual A units moved from staging to practice table. No other A movement; task asks for remaining staging units. |
| FPY3 | Carton B label | Product B: 2 cases received. Units per case absent; no packing list or unit-level count supplied. |
Question for the model
Which remaining A total can be calculated, and can B's two cases be converted using A's pack size?
Show the reference answer and checks
FPY1 supports 24 A units at receipt, and FPY2's five-unit transfer leaves 19 at staging under the stated no-other-movement condition. FPY3 provides only B's two cases without a pack size, so B's unit total remains unknown. A's eight-per-case label is product-specific and cannot fill B's missing denominator. Preserve units, cases and location state rather than combine unlike quantities into one apparent total.
- Subtracting individual units directly from case counts without conversion.
- Applying another product's case size when the relevant label is absent.
Fields to preserve
- Product and container count
- Defines the incoming quantity.
- Units per case and source label
- Supports conversion.
- Transfer unit and location
- Tracks the remaining state.
Test another case
Add B's independently verified six units per case. Require its 12-unit total while A's staging balance remains 19.
Use original labels and consenting adults with empty props. Exclude recipient details, addresses and identifiable volunteer records.
