A critique can refer to an earlier sketch after the final version has changed. Copyright Office guidance for visual artists provides context for rights in original work. A school can write an evaluation that links an original practice artwork and teacher observation without exporting student portfolios. U.S. Copyright Office visual artists guidance
Create two versions of an instructor-owned abstract drawing and a dated critique for each. Give the second version a resolved feature and an unrelated lookalike annotation. Ask which observation belongs to each version and what remains subjective. Score source and version matching, with assessment authority retained by the instructor.
Exclude actual student work, names, personal evaluations, third-party art and licensed course examples. Obtain explicit rights for any image or recorded commentary.
Describe an original critique exercise
Original Fiund exercise
A critique's version reference matters as much as its wording
An instructor creates two original abstract sketches. The task links comments to versions and distinguishes a visible change from a subjective artistic judgment.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| FA1 | Owned sketch version A | Central triangle is solid blue. Critique CA says the central region looks visually heavy. |
| FA2 | Owned sketch version B | Central triangle now outlined; version-specific critique CB acknowledges that change but still calls the composition heavy. |
| FA3 | Unlinked annotation | Comment says remove the red circle; neither A nor B contains a red circle, and no artwork ID is supplied. |
Question for the model
Which factual change is documented between A and B, and does the continuing subjective critique or unrelated annotation override it?
Show the reference answer and checks
FA1 and FA2 document a change from a solid-blue central triangle to an outlined triangle. CB explicitly recognizes that change while retaining a subjective impression of heaviness; the opinion does not show that the edit failed to occur. FA3 has no matching artwork feature or version identity. Keep it unassigned rather than inventing a red circle or treating it as a critique of B.
- Using a subjective repeated opinion to deny a visible documented edit.
- Assigning an annotation to an artwork that lacks the named feature and identifier.
Fields to preserve
- Artwork version
- Links factual observations to the correct image.
- Comment source and reference
- Preserves which version a critique names.
- Factual versus subjective statement
- Prevents taste judgments from becoming objective change labels.
Test another case
Create version C restoring the solid triangle while changing a different feature. Ask the model to describe the actual version-to-version edits rather than a presumed linear improvement.
Use instructor-owned original work and commentary with explicit rights. Exclude student portfolios, identities, personal assessments and third-party art.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
