Energy consulting measurement baseline and comparison data for AI
Technical energy consultants compare measurements across periods with different operating conditions.
NAICS 541690 · Other Scientific and Technical Consulting Services
Technical energy consultants compare measurements across periods with different operating conditions. DOE’s federal measurement and verification resources describe different approaches to evaluating energy and water savings. An original scenario can show when an apparent difference needs a documented adjustment. DOE measurement and verification options · U.S. Census 2022 NAICS manual
Create two dummy meter logs and an operating-hours record. Reduce the operating hours after an invented intervention and leave a second input missing. Ask the model what can be directly compared and which conclusion about savings remains unsupported. A reviewer should check units, duration and adjustment assumptions.
Exclude client utility bills, control details, real load profiles and proprietary calculations. Use a simple authorized scenario and confirm rights before expanding the sample.
Describe an original energy comparison exercise
Original Fiund exercise
Lower total energy with fewer operating hours is not an isolated savings estimate
A fictional consulting exercise has abstract meter totals and runtime. It contains no actual load profile, utility bill, control setting or proposed intervention.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| TE1 | Practice baseline period | 100 energy units over 10 operating hours; period length stated and meter basis fixed. |
| TE2 | After period | 80 energy units over 8 operating hours under the same meter basis. Activity/output quantity missing. |
| TE3 | Review note | No adjustment model or evidence isolating the invented intervention's effect from runtime/output changes supplied. |
Question for the model
What direct total and hourly differences can be reported, and does the packet establish 20 units of intervention-caused savings?
Show the reference answer and checks
TE1 and TE2 show total use falling from 100 to 80 while operating hours fall from ten to eight. Both simple energy-per-hour ratios equal ten under the stated basis. TE3 provides no adjustment model or output evidence isolating an intervention effect. Report the raw totals and runtime normalization separately, without calling the 20-unit difference verified intervention-caused savings or inferring unchanged activity.
- Attributing the full total reduction to an intervention while runtime also changed.
- Treating a simple hourly ratio as a complete measurement-and-verification model.
Fields to preserve
- Meter unit and period
- Defines the measured total.
- Operating hours and activity basis
- Shows material baseline conditions.
- Adjustment model and assumptions
- Identifies evidence needed for a causal savings claim.
Test another case
Keep runtime constant but change output quantity. Require the model to notice the new comparability issue rather than relying only on matched hours.
Use invented logs and assumptions. Exclude utility bills, client loads, controls and proprietary calculations.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
