The Brick Industry Association publishes technical notes covering brick manufacture and characteristics. A producer can propose a task that preserves the difference between a photographed shade comparison and a documented dimensional measurement. BIA technical notes

Create an original mock production lot with three labeled brick-shaped props, a fictional sample map and inspection sheet. Photograph the props under two lighting conditions. Ask an assistant to identify which comparisons use a shared reference and which measurement belongs to each sample. Include one image with the color reference cropped and a measurement sheet for a neighboring lot.

Annotate sample location, lighting reference, dimension direction and source record. Reserve a new surface texture for evaluation. Score incorrect lot associations, unsupported color comparisons and confused measurement directions independently. The reviewer key should avoid converting an appearance difference into a conclusion about firing conditions when the exercise provides no such evidence.

Use original samples and invented measurements. Customer blends, proprietary firing records and inspection-agency reports need disclosure authority. A licensing brief should explain the observation task and qualified review, including what the available images cannot establish. Establish buyer requirements before collecting production imagery or preparing commercial test histories.

Original Fiund exercise

One tray sample has incomplete dimensional evidence

Owned colored blocks and a toy ledger represent fictional brick lots.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1Lot logBrick B6 from lot P; B8 from lot Q.
2Shade photoB6 with owned reference card under matched light.
3Dimension sheetLength listed for B8 only; no B6 dimension.

Question for the model

What evidence can be filed for B6?

Show the reference answer and checks

File the shade observation using record 2 and retain B6's lot P identity from record 1. Leave the length blank because record 3 describes B8, another specimen and lot. The image and its reference card do not supply a calibrated length.

  • Joining by similar looking bricks
  • Filling missing geometry with an adjacent sample

Fields to preserve

brick_sample_id
Links observation to exact specimen
view_reference
Documents the shade comparison context
dimension_status
Shows whether a measurement exists

Test another case

Use two samples from the same lot with one length missing; retain the missing state instead of substituting a lot average.

No real grading criteria, masonry recommendations, supplier lots or actual dimensional tolerances.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
