Cemetery plot index and map revision data for AI
A section label can be repeated across maps or change between revisions.

A section label can be repeated across maps or change between revisions. The VA’s Nationwide Gravesite Locator illustrates a public lookup service for burial locations. An operator can build an original record-linkage task using a completely fictional layout and no decedent information. VA Nationwide Gravesite Locator
Draw two invented sections with the same row number. Write a map correction that moves a plot’s documented identifier without creating a new plot. Ask the model to return the corrected section and explain which map supports the change. Include a near match whose section is missing so the expected response preserves the ambiguity.
Use abstract coordinates and original drawings. Keep real names, interment records, photographs of markers and family information out.
Describe a fictional plot index sample
Original Fiund exercise
A map-index correction changes the documented alias, not the physical plot count
Abstract rectangles and invented plot IDs form a fictional index. There is no decedent, family, marker image, interment record or real burial location.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| CPX1 | Original map M1 | Plot P7 indexed section A/row 2; plot P8 section B/row 2. |
| CPX2 | Authorized map correction M2 | P7 index corrected to section C/row 2. Explicitly same plot identity, no new plot created. |
| CPX3 | Ambiguous lookup | Record says row 2/plot 8 but section missing. No cross-reference establishes whether it is P8 or another practice plot. |
Question for the model
What location alias does the current map support for P7, and can the correction or shared row number resolve the ambiguous lookup?
Show the reference answer and checks
CPX2 makes section C/row 2 the current documented alias for P7 while preserving its identity as one plot. CPX1's A/row 2 remains the superseded index entry. CPX3 lacks the section needed for its own lookup; P7's correction and a shared row number do not establish that separate record's identity. Report the corrected map source and retain the unresolved near-match rather than creating a second P7.
- Counting an index correction as a new physical plot.
- Resolving a section-missing lookup from a repeated row number alone.
Fields to preserve
- Stable plot ID
- Preserves identity across map aliases.
- Section, row and map revision
- Defines the documented index location.
- Correction relationship
- Separates a record amendment from a physical event.
Test another case
Add a second section containing a plot 8 in row 2. Require the model to explain why the ambiguous lookup needs a section-specific reference.
Use original abstract drawings and dummy IDs. Exclude real names, interments, markers and family information.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
