Auto repair data for AI fault diagnosis and tool recognition
The most useful record in a repair bay can be the observation that rules out a wrong explanation.

The most useful record in a repair bay can be the observation that rules out a wrong explanation. Google DeepMind published automotive gauge reading as an example of embodied reasoning. Figure mentions oil changes among tasks collected by Index. These sources show related uses for visual readings and action sequences. They give a shop examples to discuss with a buyer before collecting. Gemini Robotics-ER · Figure Index
Start with diagnosis on a training rig
Use a benchtop trainer and a fault that a technician can reproduce without running a customer vehicle. Capture the initial symptom, test setup, reading, expected range and verified cause. Include two cases with similar symptoms but different causes. Review any readout labels with a technician. A model could be evaluated on selecting the next test or reading the instrument under different lighting.
For a records-only sample, create a synthetic repair order with technician notes, diagnostic checks, the confirmed fault and the final outcome. Keep manufacturer diagnostic procedures and customer records outside the proposed bundle unless their license permits the use.
Prevent location and customer leakage
Use controlled equipment and shop safety protocols. Keep actual VINs, license plates, addresses, repair orders and connected-vehicle accounts out of the sample. Confirm rights for any service information and permission for technicians appearing in the recording. Avoid filming work where the recording would interfere with safety.
Lead with one diagnostic problem. Describe the training rig, available sensor or instrument output and how you know the actual fault. Describe collection capabilities
Original Fiund exercise
Distinguish a reproduced practice fault from a similar symptom
A fictional paper trainer log uses abstract symptoms and reviewer findings. No vehicle is diagnosed, modified or operated.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| TRAINER-A1 | First practice case | Trainer alias A records symptom S under test condition C. |
| CHECK-A2 | Independent case review | A's controlled exercise log records verified cause K and references A1. |
| TRAINER-B1 | Second practice case | Trainer B records the same symptom S, but its test-condition and review fields are incomplete. |
| NOTE-B2 | Unverified proposed explanation | A note proposes K for B because A had a similar symptom. |
Question for the model
Which case has a supplied verified cause, and can that finding be assigned to B?
Show the reference answer and checks
CHECK-A2 supplies the practice finding for A under the documented condition and case reference. B has a similar symptom but lacks the matching test and independent review needed to support that cause. NOTE-B2 is a proposal, not verification. Preserve B's unresolved status rather than copy A's finding across cases. The exercise makes no real repair or safety recommendation.
- Assigning one case's verified cause to another solely from a shared symptom.
- Treating a proposed diagnosis as a completed independent check.
Fields to preserve
- Trainer case and test condition
- Preserve the context in which the observation was made.
- Observed symptom
- Keep the raw observation separate from a cause label.
- Verified finding reference
- Attach a cause only to the case actually reviewed.
- Outcome status
- Distinguish proposed, tested and independently confirmed results.
Test another case
Supply a different verified cause for B under a new condition. Test whether the model follows the new evidence instead of the repeated symptom.
Use independently authored records or an approved controlled trainer. Exclude customer vehicles, VINs, plates, addresses, manufacturer procedures and connected accounts unless separately authorized.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
