Collision shop panel condition and repair evidence for AI
An estimate can name a repair zone that is hard to locate in a tightly cropped photo.

An estimate can name a repair zone that is hard to locate in a tightly cropped photo. A body shop can collect a more useful example by connecting a wide reference view, a marked panel region and an after-image taken under matching lighting. I-CAR publishes collision repair technical resources and illustrates the role of vehicle-specific requirements. I-CAR repairability and material guidance
Use a shop-owned test panel. Photograph one surface mark from two angles, then capture the same zone after an approved cosmetic repair. Keep a separate appearance annotation for a reflection that looks like a defect. Ask the evaluator to locate the matching panel region and identify when an angle makes the comparison unreliable.
Leave plates, insurance estimates, vehicle owner records and neighboring jobs out of frame. Document the photographer’s rights and the panel owner’s authorization.

Original Fiund exercise
A matching panel region matters more than a tightly cropped mark
An owned training panel has a washable reference mark and independently annotated reflection. The exercise compares approved images without a vehicle owner, insurance estimate or repair procedure.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| CRP1 | Wide reference view | Panel P, region R beside square marker; mark M visible under light L. |
| CRP2 | Matched after-image | P/R and square marker readable under L; M no longer visible. Reviewer links before/after regions. |
| CRP3 | Oblique close-up | Bright line resembles a mark but reviewer labels reflection. Panel and region cropped; no link to P/R supplied. |
Question for the model
Which pair supports the documented appearance change, and can the unlinked oblique close-up establish a remaining defect in P/R?
Show the reference answer and checks
CRP1 and CRP2 provide a reviewed identity and region match under the same light, supporting that M is visible before and no longer visible afterward in P/R. CRP3 lacks the panel-region link and has an independent reflection label. It cannot establish a remaining defect in that region. Keep region attribution and appearance classification separate without inferring hidden repair quality, material condition or responsibility.
- Assigning a cropped close-up to the target repair zone without a reference link.
- Treating a reviewer-labeled reflection as a confirmed surface defect.
Fields to preserve
- Panel and reference region
- Defines a valid comparison pair.
- View, light and marker
- Preserves orientation and appearance conditions.
- Independent reflection annotation
- Separates a visual lookalike from the target mark.
Test another case
Use the same panel but a different region marker in the after-image. Require an attribution gap despite otherwise matching lighting.
Use shop-owned props and cleared photography. Exclude plates, estimates, owners, neighboring jobs and protected manufacturer material.
