Water and sewer installation evidence for AI review

A photo taken before cover can document a connection without identifying which segment it belongs to.

A photo taken before cover can document a connection without identifying which segment it belongs to. OSHA’s trenching resources provide safety context. FHWA’s digital as-built guidance illustrates the value of linking a recorded asset and an observation. An offline exercise can test segment identification with no excavation access. Use two inert bench assemblies and an invented segment diagram. Pair one with a verified observation and give another a lookalike image from the wrong connection. Ask which source supports each identity, whether the label is readable, and what requires review. Keep the visual claim separate from testing or approval.

Use no infrastructure locations, drawings, active work sites, service maps or identifiable workers. Record only approved training props at ground level.

Describe a mock installation sample

Original Fiund exercise

A lookalike connection needs its own segment link

Two inert bench assemblies illustrate fictional segments W1 and W2. No excavation, infrastructure drawing, active service or pressure test is involved.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
WS1Invented segment diagramW1 links connection C-A; W2 links C-B.
WS2Reviewed pre-cover imageC-A label and W1 card readable; reviewer confirms the association. Image shows visible connection geometry only.
WS3W2 attachmentPhoto resembles WS2 and visible label is C-A. No C-B image or authorized diagram correction supplied.

Question for the model

Which segment has an identified connection observation, and what does the W2 attachment fail to establish?

Show the reference answer and checks

WS1 and WS2 establish an identified visual observation of C-A associated with W1. WS3 still shows C-A even though it sits in W2's attachment set. Without a C-B observation or an authorized relationship correction, it does not establish W2's specified connection identity. Flag the mismatch and request the relevant view. None of the images supplies testing, concealed-condition or installation-approval evidence.

  • Using the attachment folder's segment name to override the readable C-A label.
  • Interpreting a visible connection photo as a passed test or approval record.

Fields to preserve

Segment-to-connection relationship
Defines the expected identity link.
Visible label and review record
Supports the actual observed association.
Attachment mismatch
Retains conflicting metadata for follow-up.
Evidence type
Separates visual geometry from testing or acceptance.

Test another case

Add a valid C-B image without its segment card. Ask what extra linking evidence is needed before associating that image with W2 rather than inferring from a matching connection label alone.

Use approved training props at ground level. Include no real infrastructure locations, service maps, project drawings, active sites or identifiable workers.
