NAICS 327991 · Cut Stone and Stone Product Manufacturing

The Natural Stone Institute publishes technical bulletins for stone professionals. A fabricator can propose an original task about carrying slab identity and face orientation through a cut layout. Natural Stone Institute technical bulletins

Create a self-designed patterned slab image, a fictional nesting plan and component labels. Cut the pattern into paper pieces. Rotate one piece and include a remnant with no transferred identifier. Ask the assistant which joins follow the executed plan and which source association is unresolved. Include an alternate layout marked as a proposal so the model cannot use it as proof of execution.

Annotate slab coordinates, visible face, cut event, component and instruction status. Hold out a new pattern family for evaluation. Score wrong-face matching, use of the proposed layout and invented remnant identity independently. The key should distinguish visual continuity from a record-supported source relationship and avoid inferring stone performance from the pattern.

Use original imagery and self-authored plans. Customer countertop layouts, licensed slab images and supplier reports need permission before sharing. Describe the layout-review task, evidence views and independently checked key to prospective buyers. An accepted brief should determine the scope of further records or capture prepared for licensing.

Original Fiund exercise

Preserve grain direction through a flipped view

The contributor draws an original stone-like pattern on paper and defines top-face coordinates.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1LayoutPiece P uses top face; stripe expected from notch toward square mark.
2Image ABottom-facing view of P; stripe appears to point left.
3Image BTop face marked; stripe goes from square toward notch.

Question for the model

Does the visible top-face pattern match the layout?

Show the reference answer and checks

No. Record 3 supplies a top-face view and shows the stripe direction reversed relative to the notch and square in record 1. Record 2's screen-left direction cannot be compared directly because it is a bottom view without the defined orientation.

  • Using screen directions instead of part landmarks
  • Comparing the bottom view to a top-face design

Fields to preserve

layout_face
Selects the intended reference side
direction_landmarks
Survive rotation and differing view angles
pattern_direction
Encodes ordered endpoints

Test another case

Rotate the top view by 180 degrees while keeping the stripe relative to marks unchanged; expect no new mismatch.

No real quarry design, commercial slab image, cutting program or installation advice.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
