Sheet metal part verification data for AI inspection

Two sheet metal parts can have nearly the same silhouette while a bend orientation or flange position makes one unusable.

NAICS 332322 · Sheet Metal Work Manufacturing

Two sheet metal parts can have nearly the same silhouette while a bend orientation or flange position makes one unusable. Scale lists manufacturing and robotics as operational-data interests. For a visual test, start with a company-owned part family and a verified outcome. Confirm whether a buyer needs images, inspection records or a captured action sequence. Scale Data Partnerships

Pair each image with a checked part identity

Use approved preformed practice parts and an internally authored schematic. Include two angles and an orientation marker. Create cases where a part is correct but rotated, and cases where the part has a genuinely different orientation. Record the verified part ID, feature being checked, view and expected disposition. Hold out an entire part family to see if the model can apply the geometric rule to a new shape.

For a records-based project, include a fabricated drawing revision and inspection result. A visual finding can support a reviewer’s workflow. The production and safety decision remains with the qualified team.

Capture only after the part is off the machine

Exclude presses, powered operations, hazardous edges and live production from the staged shoot. Verify rights to any technical drawings and remove customer names, dimensions that reveal designs and traceable serials. OSHA’s press brake guidance describes hazards that belong in the facility’s own safety process. OSHA press brake safeguarding

Original Fiund exercise

A preform is not missing its finished bend

A fictional paper bracket has a flat stage and a formed stage, each with original reference artwork.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1Stage guideFlat F shows slots S1 and S2, no bend; formed B retains both slots and adds an upturned tab.
2Photo 1Stage F tag, both slots visible, tab flat.
3Photo 2Stage B tag, both slots visible, tab bent downward.

Question for the model

What is expected and what is discrepant?

Show the reference answer and checks

Photo 1 agrees with the flat-stage reference in records 1 and 2. Photo 2 has both expected slots but the tab direction disagrees with the formed reference in records 1 and 3. The same tab region needs a stage-specific label.

  • Applying formed criteria to a flat preform
  • Using correct slot count to overlook bend direction

Fields to preserve

work_stage
Selects the appropriate reference geometry
slot_visibility
Tracks feature completeness
tab_direction
Records formed orientation independently

Test another case

Provide an unlabeled flat silhouette of a formed part seen edge-on; require stage or view evidence before deciding.

No actual sheet-metal drawings, bending parameters, customer parts or fabrication approvals.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
