NIST explains metrological traceability and its supporting measurement context. A manufacturer can propose an original task that matches a requested observation to the correct instrument, range and calibration record. NIST traceability guidance

Prepare fictional instrument cards, range identifiers and calibration tables. Give two channels similar numeric readings but different configured ranges. Ask which observation answers a stated request. Include a later range change and a report missing the channel identifier. The key should retain the effective range and identify the unsupported association.

Annotate instrument, channel, range, property, unit, date and report version. Evaluate with a new table format and an explicitly supplied calculation rule. Score wrong-range selection, a later configuration applied to earlier data and guessed channel identity independently. A complete example should contain enough evidence for a reproducible answer with its source fields cited.

Use self-authored records and invented values without operating a process. Customer production information, licensed methods, proprietary configurations and outside calibration material need permission and qualified review. A licensing brief should state the range-selection task and checked key. Establish buyer requirements before preparing commercial histories or new capture.

Original Fiund exercise

A midpoint check is not coverage of a whole range

Mock instrument report stubs use named points and no real calibration procedure.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1RequestCoverage at low, midpoint and high on toy range R2.
2Report ARange R2 midpoint recorded; low and high absent.
3Report BRange R1 low and high recorded.

Question for the model

Which requested R2 points are supported?

Show the reference answer and checks

Only the R2 midpoint is documented in record 2. The endpoints in record 3 belong to R1 and do not transfer across ranges. A reviewer should record one covered point out of the three requested, without asserting full-range calibration.

  • Treating midpoint coverage as full-range coverage
  • Merging endpoint evidence from a different range

Fields to preserve

range_id
Identifies the test domain
point_position
Tracks coverage within it
point_evidence_status
Keeps missing endpoints explicit

Test another case

Use a shared physical point appearing under two ranges; require scope evidence even when values coincide.

No real calibration procedure, instrument setpoints, compliance claims or plant data.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
