NAICS 326122 · Plastics Pipe and Pipe Fitting Manufacturing

TWI explains information marked on thermoplastic pipe. A manufacturer can propose an original task that preserves the distinction between a product designation, its recorded dimensions and the actual source material. TWI thermoplastic-pipe markings

Create fictional pipe labels, a product drawing and a sample-measurement sheet. State the exercise's nominal and measured dimensions explicitly. Ask which evidence answers a customer request and which specimen belongs to the selected product. Include a similar label from a different compound reference and a photograph with the production identifier obscured.

Annotate product designation, compound reference, specimen, measurement location, unit and visible region. Evaluation can change the marking layout and add a fitting paired with its own record. Score nominal values substituted for measured values, wrong-compound matches and invented covered text independently. The key should compare the supplied evidence without determining pressure capability or installation suitability.

Use inert pipe-shaped props and original labels. Actual customer designs, certification marks, licensed specifications and laboratory reports need authority and specialist review. A licensing proposal should define the identity-and-dimension task and checked examples. Confirm buyer requirements before preparing commercial product records or commissioning additional capture.

A marking identifies nominal class, not a measured diameter

Fictional pipe props are cardboard. Their printed classes have no connection to actual piping standards.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1Printed labelMock pipe P4 marked nominal N20.
2Drawing legendN20 is a size category; reference plane X is where diameter observations are recorded.
3Sample worksheetP4 outer diameter 23 mm at plane X; wall reading absent.

Question for the model

How should these fields be reported?

Show the reference answer and checks

Record nominal category N20 from record 1 and the observed 23 mm outer diameter at X from record 3. The legend in record 2 explains why those fields can differ. No wall thickness or inner diameter is supplied in this packet.

  • Converting the nominal class directly into millimeters
  • Inferring an inside diameter without wall geometry

Fields to preserve

nominal_category
Preserves the label's classification
measurement_plane
Identifies where the reading applies
diameter_type
Distinguishes outer and inner geometry

Test another case

Provide an identical nominal label on two mock product families and require family-specific matching.

No installation instructions, pressure ratings, actual standards labeling or compliance claims.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
