Photo lab scan masters and derivative lineage data for AI
A lab may preserve a master scan and export a cropped or color-adjusted derivative.

A lab may preserve a master scan and export a cropped or color-adjusted derivative. The Library of Congress describes FADGI still-image digitization guidelines. An original controlled scan can evaluate whether software identifies a derivative’s source and recognizes changes made during processing. Library of Congress FADGI still image overview
Create two original test images from objects you control. Export a master and a delivery derivative from one, and supply a plausible crop with no parent record for the second. Have a reviewer score lineage, crop location and whether the displayed colors reflect a changed processing setting.
Clear the rights to source images and any depicted work. Keep client negatives, faces, scan orders and embedded location metadata out of the sample.
Describe an original scan lineage sample
Original Fiund exercise
A crop's apparent content does not establish its master-scan parent
Two original still-life test images have independently created scan and export records. The exercise checks lineage and processing metadata without client negatives or a commercial digitization claim.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| SLN1 | Source image A master | Master MA, full-frame view, processing setting Neutral. |
| SLN2 | Delivery derivative DA | Explicitly maps crop rectangle R from MA; processing changed to Warm. Reviewer confirms the source map. |
| SLN3 | Plausible crop DB | Looks like part of original image B, but master ID and processing setting missing. Filename says final-neutral. |
Question for the model
Which derivative has a verified source-and-processing lineage, and can DB's appearance or filename establish its parent or color setting?
Show the reference answer and checks
SLN2 explicitly traces DA to rectangle R of MA and records the Neutral-to-Warm processing change from SLN1. Its displayed color should therefore be interpreted with that transformation, not as an unchanged master view. SLN3 has neither verified parent nor processing metadata; apparent resemblance and final-neutral naming do not fill those gaps. Report the traceable derivative separately from the unresolved crop.
- Treating a delivery derivative's color as the unchanged master appearance despite a recorded processing change.
- Inferring a master link or neutral setting from a plausible crop and filename.
Fields to preserve
- Source image, master and derivative
- Preserves resource identity.
- Crop rectangle
- Locates the selected source region.
- Processing-setting lineage
- Explains a documented visual transformation.
Test another case
Link DB to MA rather than B and supply a verified crop map. Require the model to update lineage from the record instead of the earlier visual guess.
Use owned original test images and cleared depicted objects. Exclude negatives, clients, faces, orders and embedded location metadata.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
