Pet supply retailer lot and shelf inventory data for AI
Two pet food bags may share a product name while their lot marks differ.
NAICS 459910 · Pet and Pet Supplies Retailers
Two pet food bags may share a product name while their lot marks differ. FDA explains why preserving a pet food lot number matters. A retailer can test inventory linkage using dummy packaging and a closed training shelf. FDA pet food lot number guidance
Make two empty practice bags with similar labels and distinct lot IDs. Give one a shelf count and the other an unmatched receiving line. Ask which bag is supported by each record and flag any count tied only to a product name.
Use original labels and no pets, shopper information, veterinary records or live store footage. Keep product safety and sales decisions with staff.

A lot-specific shelf count cannot be assigned to every bag with the same product name
Two empty owned prop bags use original lot labels in a closed training shelf. There is no food, pet, customer, recall decision or live store footage.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| PLS1 | Product and lot cards | Dummy product P has lots L1 and L2. Similar art and same product name; distinct readable lot marks. |
| PLS2 | Shelf count | Original count event C1 explicitly records four P/L1 props in position S. Reviewer checks the lot marks. |
| PLS3 | Receiving row | P receipt lists six units but lot field blank. A nearby L2 bag is visible without a matching receiving or shelf-count reference. |
Question for the model
Which lot has a verified count, and can the unlotted receipt establish L2's received or shelf quantity?
Show the reference answer and checks
PLS2 supports four observed L1 props in S under a reviewed lot-specific count. PLS3's receipt supports a product-level six-unit figure but lacks the lot association needed to assign it to L2. A visible L2 prop does not establish its received quantity or another counted set. Keep product, lot, receiving and shelf states separate without making a real inventory, recall or product-safety decision from an unlinked row.
- Applying a product-level count or receipt to a specific lot without evidence.
- Inferring quantity from a nearby bag or merging distinct lots with identical branding.
Fields to preserve
- Product and lot mark
- Defines traceable identity.
- Shelf position and counted quantity
- Supports local observation.
- Receiving target and unresolved lot
- Limits receipt attribution.
Test another case
Add a reviewed receipt mapping the six units to L2 but no shelf count. Require receiving to resolve while shelf quantity remains unknown.
Use empty original props. Exclude veterinary records, shoppers and actual food; staff retain safety and sales decisions.
