Painting and wall-covering samples for visual AI quality checks

A camera may confuse a shadow with a coating defect or miss a seam that appears only at an oblique angle. A controlled sample can test that problem without recording a client’s home. micro1 publicly invites approved recordings of skilled trade work. A painting contractor should verify whether the specific task is eligible before filming. micro1 trade recording program
Build a visual test around lookalikes
Use new, authorized training panels with approved examples of a visible overlap, lifted seam or finish variation. Include one panel that looks defective because of the lighting. Record the view, light position, surface material and a qualified reviewer’s label. If the intended test needs a second angle to resolve the finding, keep both views tied to the same sample. Hold back a different panel and lighting setup to evaluate whether the result generalizes.
The buyer should specify whether it needs defect classification, region labels or evidence of the review sequence. A photo alone cannot establish preparation quality or a hidden material condition.
Keep real renovation hazards outside the shoot
Film new practice material in a controlled area. Avoid occupied customer sites, proprietary finishes and any material of uncertain composition. EPA’s renovation, repair and painting program has requirements for covered work involving lead-based paint. Use the contractor’s authorized safety process for any real project. Resolve a shadow lookalike with linked views
New practice panels have owned images and independent reviewer labels. A movable light creates one apparent dark band; another panel has a documented lifted paper seam.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| PW1 | Panel A view 1 | Dark vertical band visible under left-side lighting; panel ID A readable. |
| PW2 | Panel A view 2 and reviewer note | Light moved right; band disappears. Reviewer identifies the first band as a lighting shadow. |
| PW3 | Panel B oblique view | B label readable; raised paper seam visible and marked by reviewer. No preparation history supplied. |
Question for the model
Which finding is supported for each panel, and can the images establish the underlying surface preparation?
Show the reference answer and checks
PW1 alone shows a dark band without establishing its cause. PW2 links the same panel under changed lighting and a reviewer label, supporting a shadow interpretation for A. PW3 supports a visible lifted seam on B. Neither view set supplies preparation records or reveals hidden substrate conditions. Report the appearance finding separately from an unsupported explanation of how it arose.
- Classifying every dark band as a coating defect from one angle.
- Inferring poor preparation or a concealed substrate condition from the seam photograph.
Fields to preserve
- Panel identity across views
- Connects the changed lighting to the same surface.
- Light position and camera angle
- Preserves conditions needed to interpret a lookalike.
- Reviewer finding and visible region
- Separates an appearance label from an unobserved cause.
Test another case
Use a new panel with a real painted band that persists when lighting moves. Test whether the model checks the new linked views rather than applying the earlier shadow label automatically.
Use new approved practice material. Exclude occupied renovations, unknown-composition surfaces, proprietary finishes and any hazardous-material work.
