A metal service center can cut several pieces from one parent stock item and retain a remnant. GS1’s traceability guideline provides a public event-model reference. A synthetic exercise can test whether a model preserves the relationship to the parent heat and material document. GS1 EPCIS guideline

Use foam prop bars with dummy heat and piece IDs. Record two pieces from one parent and a remnant whose tag was lost. Provide a certificate-like record for one heat and a second from a similar stock grade. Ask which claims can be traced and where identification stops.

Use original forms and inert props, not a live cutting operation. Keep supplier certificates, jobs, grades under NDA and customer pricing out.

Describe a staged material lineage sample

Original Fiund exercise

A remnant with a lost tag cannot inherit a parent heat from nearby cut pieces

Foam stock props use original heat and piece aliases. No live cutting, actual material grade, supplier certificate, job, customer or price is involved.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
MH1Parent recordStock S1 explicitly belongs to mock heat H1. Original certificate-like card C1 names H1 and abstract property Q.
MH2Cut lineageOriginal fictional event maps pieces P1 and P2 from S1 with retained child tags. Loose remnant R lacks its tag and no R-to-S1 link supplied.
MH3Other heatCard C2 for H2 has similar generic grade description but different abstract property Z. No heat equivalence or recovered remnant ID.

Question for the model

Which pieces trace to the H1 document, and can R inherit that lineage from location or similar appearance?

Show the reference answer and checks

MH1 and MH2 trace P1 and P2 through S1 to H1 and C1's abstract property Q. R lacks the parent or tag evidence needed to make that trace, even if it sits next to those pieces. MH3's similar grade description belongs to another heat and cannot resolve the gap. Preserve child and remnant identity separately rather than extend a certificate-like record to unlabeled material or infer real properties from foam props.

  • Applying a heat document to an untagged nearby remnant.
  • Using grade resemblance to merge distinct heats or lose parent-child links after cutting.

Fields to preserve

Heat, stock and child piece
Defines lineage.
Cut event and certificate target
Supports the trace.
Tag loss and unresolved remnant
Limits attribution.

Test another case

Add R's recovered parent tag but no verified association to the physical remnant. Require linkage review before assigning H1.

Use inert foam and original forms. Exclude actual certificates, grades under agreement and customer records; no cutting or materials guidance is provided.
