Machine tool data for AI calibration-axis context
NIST publishes work on machine-tool calibration and errors.
NAICS 333517 · Machine Tool Manufacturing
NIST publishes work on machine-tool calibration and errors. A manufacturer can define an original document task that keeps each observation attached to the correct machine, axis and configuration. NIST machine-tool calibration research
Create fictional machine identifiers, an axis glossary and calibration tables. Give two axes similar numeric results but different directions and units. Ask which observation answers a stated request. Include a component replacement recorded after the selected test and a report with an absent configuration reference. The key should retain the test's time and configuration limits.
Annotate machine, axis, direction, observation, unit, date and source version. Hold out a new table format for evaluation. Score wrong-axis selection, use of a post-test configuration and unsupported unit assumptions independently. Supply any intended calculation rule so the answer can be reconstructed from the exercise records.
Use invented values and self-authored reports without operating a machine. Customer calibration histories, licensed methods and proprietary compensation information need explicit authority and qualified review. Describe the context-selection task and checked key in the licensing brief. Establish buyer requirements before preparing a larger archive or new capture.

A calibrated axis does not establish every axis
Fictional machine records report only coverage labels, without machine settings or calibration procedures.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Axis glossary | Machine M7: U longitudinal, V transverse, W vertical. |
| 2 | Report R1 | M7 U and W measured; V absent. |
| 3 | Report R2 | Machine M8 V measured. |
Question for the model
Is transverse coverage established for M7?
Show the reference answer and checks
No. Record 1 maps transverse to V, and R1 in record 2 omits that axis for M7. R2 supplies a V record for a different machine. The coverage table should show U and W documented, V missing for M7.
- Treating calibration coverage as all axes by default
- Joining a missing axis to another machine
Fields to preserve
- machine_serial
- Pins the exact unit
- axis_glossary_key
- Resolves human-readable axis names
- measurement_coverage
- Lists tested axes explicitly
Test another case
Use a revision that renames V but keeps the physical axis; require a revision-aware alias mapping.
No actual machine calibration, tolerances, customer equipment reports or certification.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
