A creator can control an original draft and still need permission for a collaborator’s contribution in the finished work. The Copyright Office provides resources by type of creative work. A creator can use a small original sample to show how the rights inventory follows an edit. U.S. Copyright Office creator resources
Use a short original passage or artwork with two versions. Assign an invented collaborator element to one version and mark it out of scope. Ask which version can be reviewed for the intended practice use and which material must remain excluded. Keep the source and evidence of authority separate.
Do not supply client work, collaborator material, unreleased works, licensed assets, or protected likenesses without independent permission. Original practice material is sufficient.

The rights inventory changes when a collaborator's element enters the edit
An author creates a short original practice passage with two versions. An invented collaborator element is described rather than copied from another person.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| IC1 | Version A source map | Original passage by creator C; practice-use U authority documented for all text. |
| IC2 | Version B source map | Reuses A plus inserted element E attributed to dummy collaborator D. E marked outside U scope. |
| IC3 | Export labels | A-only export X maps to A. Export Y labeled original final maps to B and includes E. |
Question for the model
Which export has a fully documented U source map, and does Y's original-final label resolve the inserted element's exclusion?
Show the reference answer and checks
IC1 and IC3 support X's A-only source map for U. Y maps to B, which IC2 records as containing excluded element E. The original-final filename does not change that component status or establish collaborator authority. Preserve version-to-element lineage and identify the excluded contribution rather than assuming that one creator's control of the initial draft covers every later addition.
- Clearing a final export from its label while ignoring its version map.
- Treating the initial creator's authority as permission for a collaborator's later element.
Fields to preserve
- Version-to-source map
- Makes added material visible.
- Contributor and element scope
- Identifies whose authority is missing.
- Export lineage
- Connects the discussed file to the correct content version.
Test another case
Create a new export that removes E but retains B in its filename. Require the actual source map, rather than either filename pattern, to determine the answer.
Use original practice text and dummy elements. Exclude clients, collaborator works, unreleased commercial material, licensed assets and protected likenesses.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
