NAICS 316210 · Footwear Manufacturing

Footwear combines an upper, sole and other components whose identities can differ within a style family. FTC publishes guidance concerning leather and imitation-leather goods. A manufacturing exercise can keep component evidence attached to the exact pair under review. FTC leather-goods guidance context

Create an original mock shoe assembly with left and right component tags, a fictional size matrix and a materials card. Give one pair matching visible uppers but a sole from an adjacent size. Ask the assistant to identify the supported assembly and the mismatched component. Add a materials declaration that applies only to the upper, so the answer cannot extend it to the whole shoe.

Annotate side, component, size system, source lot and declared material scope. Reserve an unfamiliar style shape for evaluation. Score component mismatch, left-right confusion and unsupported whole-product claims separately. The reference key should cite the evidence for each finding and preserve an unreadable tag as unresolved.

Use original designs and neutral props. Customer lasts, branded patterns, commissioned drawings and supplier reports need rights review. Explain the component-pairing task and annotation process to prospective buyers, then establish their accepted requirements before preparing a larger factory dataset.

Pair components by foot and size system

Paper silhouettes represent a fictional shoe upper and soles. Style identifiers and fit mapping are invented.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
F1Upper tagStyle Wave, left, size 8 in scale U.
F2Size matrixFor Wave, U8 maps to molded sole size M41.
F3Sole trayItem P: Wave left M41. Item Q: Wave right M41. Item R: Crest left M41.
F4RequestIdentify the candidate sole using all three matching keys.

Question for the model

Which sole candidate belongs with the upper?

Show the reference answer and checks

Choose P from F3. It matches the Wave style and left foot on F1, and its M41 marking matches U8 through the style-specific mapping in F2. Q is the opposite foot and R belongs to another style despite the shared number.

  • Matching numerical sizes across incompatible scales
  • Treating the right part as equivalent after mirroring the photo

Fields to preserve

size_system
Prevents direct comparison of unrelated size codes
foot
Preserves left and right through mirrored views
style_family
Limits the mapping table to its valid family

Test another case

Use a style whose U8 maps to another molded size and include a valid left sole for each style.

Use owned paper silhouettes; omit real lasts, suppliers, trademarks and fit claims.
