Egg shell inspection images for evaluating AI

An exterior image and a candled image reveal different evidence.

NAICS 112310 · Chicken Egg Production

An exterior image and a candled image reveal different evidence. An egg producer could test whether a model keeps the two observations separate. USDA’s Egg Grading Manual provides inspection context. A small training exercise can use original photographs and independent labels without attempting to issue official grades. USDA Egg Grading Manual

Use approved sample eggs handled through the facility’s normal controls. Give each an ID and capture an exterior image and, where already approved, a candling image. Have a reviewer label what each view supports and where they need more evidence. Include a shell with a harmless mark, a known indication, and an exterior-only image. Keep the labels local to the view and specimen. Use a different capture setup in evaluation if glare is likely to affect the result.

Get permission before reproducing grading-line footage or a buyer’s defect library. Keep farm marks, production counts, and exact inspection settings private. Do not create damaged product for a recording.

Describe a labeled egg image set

Original Fiund exercise

Exterior and candled views support different observations for the same egg

A proposed egg-view dataset is represented by original textual annotations of approved sample aliases. No physical handling, altered product, images or official grade issuance occurs here.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
EG1Egg A exteriorSmall superficial mark visible. Reviewer labels the mark only; no candled view for A supplied.
EG2Egg B paired viewsExterior reviewer says no observed exterior indication in the supplied view. Separate candled-view reviewer marks an internal indication; both cards identify B.
EG3Loose viewCandled image description has no specimen ID. It cannot be linked to A or B through metadata.

Question for the model

Which observations can be attributed to A and B, and does A's exterior mark establish an internal indication?

Show the reference answer and checks

EG1 supports A's visible exterior mark but no internal observation. EG2 supports two distinct findings for B: no observed exterior indication in that view and a reviewer-marked internal indication in its linked candled view. EG3 lacks specimen identity and cannot fill A's missing view. Preserve the view-specific evidence; neither an exterior mark nor a clean-looking shell determines every internal property or an official grade.

  • Inferring internal condition from an exterior-only photograph.
  • Attaching an unlinked candled view to the specimen that lacks one.

Fields to preserve

Specimen and view type
Links complementary observations correctly.
Feature region and reviewer scope
Limits the label to visible evidence.
Capture setup and missing linkage
Preserves unresolved attribution.

Test another case

Add a correctly identified A candled-view annotation with an inconclusive result. Require the missing-view gap to close while internal status stays unresolved.

Use original approved samples and facility controls for any later photography. Exclude farm marks, line settings and buyer libraries; do not damage product for recording.
