Conveyor handoff data for AI event matching

A tote can be detected on two sides of a transfer without representing two completed movements.

A tote can be detected on two sides of a transfer without representing two completed movements. NIST’s manufacturing monitoring research uses components including conveyor belts, inspection cameras and sensors. A conveyor builder can propose a small test that aligns signals with an independent observation. NIST manufacturing monitoring research

Use a simulation or supervised training fixture with a generic tote. Write a trace where a handoff is confirmed by the next station and a trace with two detections near the boundary but no downstream confirmation. Note the timebase for each sensor and the reviewer’s ground truth. Ask the model to reconstruct the handoff and identify any ambiguous interval. Test multiple transit times so a fixed time threshold cannot explain every case.

Keep proprietary layout diagrams, control code, customer product flow, and alarm mappings outside the packet. Use simulated logs if filming would require access to a moving line or restricted area.

Describe a conveyor event dataset

Original Fiund exercise

Count one tote across a two-sensor handoff

An original tabletop sketch and fictional sensor log model passage of inert boxes.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1Sensor ATote T8 exit at 10:01:03.
2Sensor BT8 entry at 10:01:05; tote T9 entry at 10:01:06.
3Transfer rulePair A exit and B entry by tote ID within five seconds.

Question for the model

How many matched transfers and unmatched entries appear?

Show the reference answer and checks

One matched transfer is supported: T8's B entry follows its A exit by two seconds under records 1–3. T9 has a B entry but no paired A exit. Do not count both T8 records as separate totes or treat T9 as a matched transfer.

  • Counting sensor events instead of transfers
  • Pairing the nearest timestamp with the wrong tote

Fields to preserve

tote_id
Identifies the transported unit
sensor_event_role
Distinguishes exit and entry
handoff_delta_seconds
Tests the matching window

Test another case

Include a repeated sensor-B entry with the same event ID; deduplicate it without discarding another tote.

No real control settings, proprietary conveyor layouts, worker imagery or safety guidance.
