Commuter rail short-turn and transfer data for AI

A train ending at an intermediate station is a different rider problem from one arriving late.

A train ending at an intermediate station is a different rider problem from one arriving late. The GTFS schedule reference and real-time trip updates give operators a vocabulary for representing scheduled stops and changes. A railroad can test an offline assistant on a canceled downstream segment and the evidence needed for a transfer. GTFS schedule reference · GTFS trip updates

Build a fictional line with five stations. Give one train a verified shortened route and another a delay with all stops intact. Add a proposed replacement connection and a confirmed one on another service day. Ask which stops are served and whether the onward option is supported. The expected answer must preserve the station order and the day for each record.

Avoid actual control communications, station security details, rider records, and staffing information. Use a synthetic service plan or cleared public data under its published terms.

Describe a rail service-change test

Original Fiund exercise

A short-turn cancels downstream stops while a delay can retain the full stopping pattern

An original five-station service fixture uses fictional trains and days. It includes no control communication, rider, staff assignment or real journey recommendation.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
CRS1Base station orderLine S1–S2–S3–S4–S5. On D1, trains A and B originally serve all five stations.
CRS2Confirmed updatesD1 A ends at S3; S4/S5 not served by A. D1 B delayed 15 minutes with all stops retained.
CRS3Replacement recordsD1 connection from S3 to S5 proposed only. Confirmed replacement exists for D2, not D1; no cross-day rule supplied.

Question for the model

Which stations remain served by each D1 train, and does the packet support a confirmed onward replacement for A?

Show the reference answer and checks

CRS2 limits A's D1 service to S1, S2 and S3, leaving S4 and S5 unserved by that train. B retains the full S1-through-S5 sequence with a delay rather than a canceled segment. CRS3's D1 replacement is only proposed, and its confirmed D2 option cannot establish D1 service. Preserve station order, update type and service day without promising an onward journey from a different day's record.

  • Describing a short-turn as merely late while retaining canceled downstream stops.
  • Applying a confirmed replacement from another service day.

Fields to preserve

Train, service day and station order
Defines the journey.
Short-turn versus delay update
Preserves the changed service.
Replacement state and day
Limits onward-service claims.

Test another case

Confirm the D1 replacement to S4 only. Require S5 to remain unsupported rather than extend the route from the proposal.

Use synthetic plans or separately cleared public feeds. Exclude security details and operational communications.
