Territory
The geographic scope of a licence — where the licensee may use the data or deploy models trained on it. Worldwide grants are common in AI training because models are served globally.
Worldwide grants dominate because models are deployed globally and enforcing borders inside a trained model is impractical. Territory still matters for compliance: where data may be stored and processed, and which laws attach — EU text-and-data-mining rules, US state biometric statutes, local publicity rights. Licences often pair a worldwide use grant with named storage and processing locations.
Why it matters
Territory decides which legal regimes both sides must satisfy, even when use is worldwide.
