Licence term
The period during which a licence remains in force. Because training embeds data in a model permanently, agreements should state what happens to trained models when the term ends.
Typical structures: fixed multi-year terms, auto-renewal with notice windows, and perpetual grants for narrowly named uses. The hard question is expiry: copies can be deleted, but a model already trained on the data cannot practically unlearn it. Contracts handle this with survival clauses stating whether trained models may continue in use after the term.
Why it matters
This clause, more than most, determines an owner’s future flexibility.
