Provenance
The verifiable record of where data came from and how it was collected and licensed — the evidence behind a rights claim.
Provenance is recorded as concrete facts: when and where material was captured, on what equipment or platform, under what consents and licences, and what processing followed. Standards such as C2PA content credentials can bind some of this to the file itself as signed metadata. Buyers expect provenance to be summarized in the data card and backed by documents on request.
Why it matters
Data with documented provenance clears legal review faster and supports stronger warranties than data of unknown origin.
