Content credentials (C2PA)
An open standard from the C2PA coalition for attaching signed provenance metadata to media files, recording how content was created and edited. Used to prove origin and detect tampering.
C2PA manifests are cryptographically signed and can record the capture device, edit history, and any AI involvement; major software and camera makers now ship support. Credentials can be stripped, so they prove origin when present rather than expose fakes when absent. For datasets, they add a machine-checkable layer on top of the paper trail.
Why it matters
Signed provenance is becoming the technical complement to a documented chain of title.
